Project Blue NZ

Project 2019-04-26 22:04:05 +1200

We are 25 Ocean enthusiasts aged between 18-25 who spend our time working on ways to be part of the solution, rather than the problem.

We are surfers, sailors, photographers and divers, marine biologists, film makers, full time workers and university students, all with one common goal:

To save the Ocean from the pollution of plastics, by turning the tap off at the source.

We believe there is no justifiable reason for such a strong and robust material to be used once and then discarded for life. We understand that plastic is an incredibly useful material, and currently irreplaceable in certain situations. However, we also understand the pollution crisis we are facing because of our excessive use of plastic, mostly in very avoidable ways. In order for us to fix this problem, we need only use it where completely necessary.

There is a massive amount of plastic waste being produced every day. Some of it we see, a lot of it we don't, and the majority of it is avoidable. Let’s work together on changing that.

But here's the big question: Who makes the change first? The companies or the consumers? Both, and that's where we come in.

It's just like the classic chicken and egg situation really, neither of them possible without the other. Only when companies who are using plastic for their products and consumers who are buying those products meet in the middle, will we see a wide-scale change. A company cannot change their ways without the support of consumers, just like a consumer cannot change their ways without company support. I mean, there are only so many cost-effective plastic alternatives out there, until you have to buy a bottle of milk, right?

So how are we, Project Blue, going to create change?

Well, what if at the same time we could work with companies to help them change from the unnecessary plastic they are using, while also telling a meaningful story to the consumer of what companies are working towards being waste free, and why? That has the chance to bring both those parties into meeting in the middle, quicker.

If we can work with companies to change by turning plastics off at the source, tell that story of change, educate and influence those who watch it, to protect the Ocean we love and have fun while doing it, there is no telling what kind of knock-on effect that could have.

We all know the problem is out there and we have been talking about it for long enough. Now is the time for real action to be taken.

Who says a group of 25 passionate people can't make a positive change? I guess you will have to wait and see.

Stoked! Together in 7 days we have raised 20% of our required funds. We still have a bit to go, but so thankful that our family & friends have got us this far!

We are now working on reaching a bigger crowd. We need to reach those who love the ocean as much as we do and who care about the future of the world. We have an amazing PR lady called Katie who is giving up her spare time to do this for us! What a lady, thanks so much Katie <3

In the meantime, we will be speaking at Longbay College's full school assembly on the 20th of May and working with 50 Young Leaders in the Waikato region on the 22nd May! We are also partnering with Dive!Tutukaka to film the opening sequence of our film on the 18th of May up at the Poor Knights Islands. Busy times ahead for the team but looking forward to it!

With Love,

PB team
