Mobile Homeless Meals Bus

Who are we?

We are Street Kai - a not for profit organisation that provides a meal, a cuppa, basic toiletries, clothing & most importantly a friendly ear for the homeless in Tauranga Moana. We're made up of volunteers led by the fantastic Tracey who is supported by Pip, Ian, Grant, Gaynor, James, Johnathan, Lucy & Margaret. We've been providing meals for the homeless for the last 18 months & we're the right people to deliver this project because we know our clients, what they need, & what we can do for them because we've been doing it successfully three times a week for the last 18 months.

What is the project about?

The idea for a mobile base from which to serve our people came from the amazing, but amazingly modest! Pip who, having been made aware of the upcoming bylaws restricting the homeless in Tauranga, came up with the brilliant idea of procuring a bus that we can park up in Tauranga to do what we've been doing but also to provide our clients with a shower & toilet facility, to have somewhere safe to go & chat with others, to be themselves, & to provide a place where they can meet with other agencies who can help them move up the ladder.

Where's my money going?

We know that the sort of bus we're looking at will cost between $95-100k which is considerable however, consider this, what price can you put on compassion & aroha? A place where homeless can come & know they will always get something to eat besides a hot beverage, basic toiletries, clothing, blankets, & tents. A place that they can shower & toilet. A place where there will always be a friendly ear to talk & connect with our people. A place where social agencies can meet with our people to discuss with them ways that they can help to get them into housing & into work. Any monies above the cost of the bus will go towards any modifications we need to do to the bus, for fuel, warrants, registration etc.

What will a successful campaign mean for Street Kai?

In a word - everything! It will mean we don't have to worry about being in breach of the bylaws by serving our people, it will mean that we can continue to do our work for many years to come, it will mean that our people have a safe place to be, it will mean that they can come to the bus & connect not only with us but with the social agencies who could potentially help them into housing & work. This is the best next step for us because with being mobile, we can neutralise any potential breaches of the new bylaws & help our most vulnerable women, men, & children.
