Te Reo Yoga Cards

Project 2019-03-08 10:56:22 +1300

He mauri te reo Māori nō Aotearoa māu, mā tātou katoa

Make Te Reo Māori an essential part of New Zealand for ALL of us!

This project will develop a set of bilingual instructional yoga cards for anyone who wants to learn Te Reo and move their body with yoga.
The idea is to have these cards as quick references for people wanting to move their body, still their mind, open their hearts and have deeper connection to others i.e. a yoga or a Hauora approach. All of this while learning or strengthening Te Reo Māori. This caters to ALL levels of yoga practitioner and ALL levels of reo speakers. The kaupapa is to uplift and empower everyone on a Hauora journey.

We feel that Te Ao Māori and the ancient teachings of yoga blend beautifully together to create a framework for overall wellbeing.  Both philosophies teach us that everything starts with our individual wellness. This leads us to better relationships with others, a clearer purpose in life and a greater connection to the world around us.
Jase Te Patu and Shirley McLeod: Wellington-based Yoga Teachers and creators of the Te Reo Yoga Cards
This project builds on our previous mahi:
  • Shirley’s Yoga Deck provides the framework, design inspiration, base content for 41 yoga poses (in English), and development process for the Yoga Cards idea.
  • Jase’s work to integrate a Hauora yoga framework based on Te Whare Tapa Whā into his yoga studio, yoga teacher training, and M3 Mindfulness for Children programme.
Jase Te Patu is the creator and founder of the M3 Mindfulness for Children programme
In 2016, 15% of New Zealand adults were able to speak basic Te Reo Māori.  By 2040 the government wants one million New Zealanders to have the ability and confidence to talk about basic things in Te Reo Māori.  We are both passionate about learning Te Reo Māori and also the practice of yoga! So - we thought we’d join the two worlds together.  With our instructional cards, you can learn Te Reo Māori whilst moving your bodies with yoga!
Each of our yoga cards will have instructions for each posture in Te Reo and Pākehā. These cards are for all level of Reo Speaker… plus all level of yoga practitioner. You can practice in your time, at your level, at home, in the office or at kura!
Shirley McLeod is the creator of the Yoga Deck - instructional yoga pose cards and sample sequences
The project commences with a wānanga with yoga and Reo experts to define and refine kupu hou for the most common yoga poses, and the cues to get into each posture.  Once photography is completed for all the postures,  we will use the design framework from Shirley's Yoga Deck to move quickly to create the Te Reo Yoga Cards (with both Te Reo and Pākehā instructions) and have them printed and ready to share with you all.
We need your help to get these cards out there! If you’re passionate about your wellbeing, plus the wellbeing of your tamariki and kaumātua… Āwhina mai i a māua!
If you, like us, are passionate to see our Te Reo Māori, live and thrive and be learnt in a new and innovative way, then please, support our crowd-funding campaign!
