What we’re doing
We want Rongotai College to shift from boys-only to co-ed in 2022. A groundswell of support in the south-east Wellington community can make that happen. We need help to get the message out and fund community events to discuss the options.
Why it’s a good idea
Life is co-ed. Many of the key skills our kids will need for the future - such as collaboration, communication, creativity and critical thinking - are best fostered in a diverse schooling environment.
Despite common preconceptions around academic achievement, research shows that single-sex or co-ed schooling has little impact on test scores after accounting for socio-economic status.
It’s more important than ever that young people learn to how to respectfully relate to each other and this is best supported in an inclusive environment.
Local schooling is great. It’s better for our kids’ health, our community and the planet.
How you can help
You can support us by donating and wearing our tees and totes with pride. If you'd like to get involved directly and donate your time just drop a comment here or on our Facebook page.
Thanks!

Why do we want Rongotai College to be a Co Ed School?

Why? Key skills our kids will need for the future - such as collaboration, communication, creativity and critical thinking - are best fostered in a diverse schooling environment. And research shows that single-sex or co-ed schooling has little impact on test scores after accounting for socio-economic status (Hattie 2017)
Other reasons for our campaign include:
· we believe that in a “me too” era, it’s more important than ever that young people learn to relate to a diverse range of peers supported by an inclusive environment.
· local schooling is better for our kids’ health and the planet - more exercise, less congestion and fewer carbon emissions.
· Rongotai College is well-loved – we want to keep all that is great about it, we just want our girls to be able to participate too!

"Currently and in the future, workplaces (and life) requires people to collaborate and communicate within a diverse environment. This is essential for safe, productive and creative outcomes. The time to develop confidence and comfort within diverse environments is in the education system, where boys and girls are able to learn how to recognise and appreciate various viewpoints and make friends across a diverse range of students. Having gone to an all-girl school and my four children attending a co-ed school, I know from experience that the co-ed school gave my children better confidence to communicate and work with a diverse range of culture and gender which has contributed to their current work-life success."
