Project 2018-11-17 09:49:21 +1300

Our campaign was a rocking success! We have now launched our online store so you can keep on purchasing our Cheesy goodness:

https://www.cheesecartel.com/our-deals

What started as a cheese filled night in Central Otago with some delicious Pinot Noir and some .com domain purchasing, has now turned into a fully fledged company here in Aotearoa, Cheese Cartel Limited.

We're crowdfunding to launch our first boxes of cheese into the world (or at least, this small corner of the South Pacific).

We’re selling three-month and six-month subscription boxes at $60 per box while we learn with our community of Cheese Champions. Once we start selling to the public, the cost may increase, so get in quick!

Cheese board

Why are we doing this?

We want to celebrate small-scale cheese producers in Aotearoa, to champion them in their journeys, help share their stories, and connect people like you to their farms of activity.

We are curating local, sustainable, small-scale cheese experiences.

We don’t want to make cheese, we want to eat it, champion it, tell the stories of the humans that create it - and we want to share it with our friends. That’s pretty much how this idea came into life, a few of us company founders eating cheese together. And helping each other with our challenges and opportunities, and witnessing each other's journeys. And now here we are.

We are setting ourselves up to champion locally-produced, ethically sourced, ultra-scrumptious cheese and will work closely with farmers and cheese-makers to ensure their product reaches you in perfect condition. We reckon these hard-to-get, small scale, hand-made cheeses are eating perfection and we hope you think so too.

What do you get?

Cheese. Glorious glorious cheese. If you pick our monthly subscription box, you will get a box of cheese delivered to your door. In the box, there will be four cheeses, and a surprise. This will be enough for you and some friends, and will be an experience you'll want to share (though, we won't make you). The first box will arrive in time for Valentines Day, and we will be sending the next boxes to arrive on the second Tuesday of the month. We think this is a pretty great holiday present for those cheese addicts that you adore.

If you pick our High Cheese option, we'll invite you to a tasting session with us in Wellington in early 2019. If you just want a badge to show your support, pick the Badge of Cheese Honour tier.

What to expect in your first box...

Our first cheese box will contain one surprise item and between 700-900g of cheese, from four different cheese makers - including the very last wedges of the award winning Cwmglyn Cheddar.

Biddy Fraser-Davies, champion cheese-maker, entrepreneur and one of the instigators of the Eketahuna Cheese Festival, was gifted her first cow at the age of 60. She taught herself to hand milk and discovered a passion for cheese making. Her hand made cheddars, each made from the milk of a single cow (she had 6) won numerous awards including “Super Gold” at the 2014 World Cheese Awards - from field of 2,700 cheeses from 33 different countries!

Sadly Biddy passed away in July and Cwmglyn won’t be producing any more cheddar. After talking with Colin, her husband, we were lucky enough to receive the last wheel of cheddar to share with you - as a chance to celebrate her achievements and remember this incredible cheese maker. We’re so excited that our first cheese box will be in part a celebration of Biddy.

Is there something else you'd like to see? Ping us a note on [email protected].

Please note: our monthly subscription cheese boxes will only be delivered in New Zealand.

Who are we?

Lani Evans - Lani is a social entrepreneur, a professional philanthropist, a runner and a vegan. Wait. What? That’s right, a vegan starting a cheese company! Why? Because Lani believes we need to tell a different story about our farmers & our food - a story about sustainable and compassionate farming, and a story of the true cost and effort required to produce the kai we all enjoy. Lani will be in charge of our “surprise” cheese box items, so stay tuned for some delicious, unexpected treats!

Hugh Evans - Hugh is the founder of Thankyou Payroll & a man who loves cheese, dogs and posing. “When a bunch of arse kicking mucho talented women decide to voltron up next to you and they offer you some coat tail riding glory - you say yes please and thank you. And also cheese? Are you kidding me?”

Silvia Zuur - With dutch and swiss blood Silvia had no choice but to love cheese from the moment she was born. Never willing to accept things on face value she recently hiked up the Swiss Alps to go live above some cows for a month and truly learn the art of Swiss Cheese making. She has had wild dreams of being in a cartel, but has realised she is actually too scared. So setting up a cheese cartel in Aotearoa seems like a perfect solution. Silvia is keen as to connect with local farmers and producers - to learn, understand, support and share cheesey stories!

Jade Taylor-Tang - Jade can’t really cook, but she can put together a pretty impressive cheeseboard... “I love cheese, I love these cheese-loving humans, and I especially love the concept of supporting local artisan cheese-makers, sharing their craft with a wider audience of cheese-lovers across Aotearoa, NZ and hopefully one day, the world!” And why? In all honesty... It’s a simple, smart, scalable social venture that truly has the potential to create social impact, this is what initially attracted me to the ‘Cheese Cartel’ 🧀 📩 💯

Anna Guenther - Anna runs a crowdfunding platform by day (and night) but her true passion has always been cheese. Her obsession is well known amongst her friends and twitter followers, but it grew to a whole new level over a few glasses of nice Central Otago red with some of her close friends: Lani, Silvia, and Hugh. When, over a few glasses of wine, they managed to buy the .com for Cheese Cartel, the jokes about starting a monthly cheese subscription box turned into a reality. Anna loves the idea of starting a business around one of her loves, with a group of friends she loves.

75% funded from 80 cheese lovers

14/12/2018 at 5:48 PM

Hi Cheese Cartelians,

WOW! Thank you for joining the Cheese Cartel. We are so stoked by the feedback, support, and pledging you all have been doing. We’ve now raised $13,515 from 80 of you wonderful souls, which means we are officially 75% funded with 5 days to go.

In order to hit go on this crazy cheese obsession, we need to meet our goal. You’ve already joined the Cartel, which is huge, but you could help us a bit more by sharing your fave cheese story to the world (and mention that there’s a new way to pledge & get your monthly artisan cheese fix through this campaign).

For those that pledged to give the gift of Cheese this holiday season, Jade has created some Cheesemas cards just for you. We’ll be sending those out after this campaign closes, so you can print them out and prepare them for your favourite cheese fiend.

In Cheese Cartel HQ, we’ve been busy sending out test boxes. You can hear the review from one of our recipients, Queen Olivia, here.

We’ve also (as of today) become an official company! We weren’t sure we’d be able to register a Cartel in the Companies Office, but somehow we managed to
.

And we are also legit members of the New Zealand Specialist Cheesemakers Association! We have to say the cheese community of Aotearoa is awesome and it’s great to have received such an enthusiastic welcome.

Thanks for all your support. We can’t wait to share more stories of local cheese makers, and the fruits of their labour, soon.

Cheers,

Silvia, Lani, Hugh, Jade & Anna (your favourite Cheese Dealers)

A third funded by 35 Cheese Lovers 🧀💖

26/11/2018 at 12:33 PM

Wow, Cheese Lovers! You are the best. We weren’t quite sure if there were people out there as obsessed with cheese as we are
 turns out, there are!

We’re already a third funded in less than a week. To celebrate, we want to tell you a bit more about our plans.

Our first cheese box will contain one surprise item and around 700gms of cheese, from four different cheese makers - including the very last wedges of the award-winning Cwmglyn Cheddar.

Biddy Fraser-Davies, champion cheese-maker, entrepreneur and one of the instigators of the Eketahuna Cheese Festival, was gifted her first cow at the age of 60. Sadly Biddy passed away in July and Cwmglyn won’t be producing any more cheddar. After talking with Colin, her husband, we were lucky enough to receive the last wheel of cheddar to share with you - as a chance to celebrate her achievements and remember this incredible cheese maker.

Each handmade cheese was produced from the milk of a single cow, bringing out the subtle flavours and individual style of Patsy, Dizzy, Jolly, Lily and Aelwyn. This cheddar has a crumbly texture and a natural edible rind, that’s aged in it’s own clarified butter.

We’re so excited that our first cheese box will be in part a celebration of Biddy. This box will be on the smaller end, as we’re including this very special cheese. Each month the boxes will range from 700gms up to 900gms.

We need to get our goal in order for us to go ahead, so please do share!

We’ve also added a few limited One Month Cheese Boxes. These will be priced at $75, and will be a perfect gift for those special cheese lovers in your life.

Ngā mihi,

Lani, Hugh, Silvia, Jade & Anna

ps. If you'd like to see the magical place where Biddy made her cheese, and where her husband Colin still runs his Middleton Model Railway Museum, you can find more details here.
