Help Get Our Rangatahi To The UN Climate Talks

Project 2018-10-15 09:12:41 +1300

In 2017, the first delegation ever to be organised, led and made up of indigenous youth attended the UN Climate talks in Bonn, Germany. This year Te Ara Whatu will be returning with a delegation of 7 awesome rangatahi Māori and Pasifika to Katowice, Poland for the 24th annual conference. The biggest barrier to getting our voices into these spaces is money so this is where we ask for your help. Can you chip in to get us there?

Every year, countries meet to co-ordinate international efforts to address climate change out of which the Paris Agreement was made in 2015. Since then the climate talks have been focussed on how this agreement will be implemented. This December the stepping stones and guiding rules to implementing the Paris agreement will be confirmed.

From the historic environmental destruction and cultural harm done to indigenous communities by the fossil fuel industry to rising sea levels and increasing droughts, climate change has drastically altered what it means to be a yong person in this time in history. This is why we are going to the climate talks - to push for solutions that centre the needs of our peoples, to stand in solidarity with our indigenous whanaunga from around the world, and learn from experts in the kaupapa by working alongside them.

We look forward to sharing our journey and learnings with you as we engage with this kaupapa.

Who is Te Ara Whatu?

Te Ara Whatu is made up of rangatahi Māori and Pasifika from around Aotearoa. We connect to a variety of Māori and Pasifika communities and walk many paths, from storytelling to environmental planning, from campaigning to policy, and all things tangata whenua.

Our mahi is founded in enabling rangatahi Māori and Pasifika to generate the skills and relationships needed to take on the intersectional challenges that we have inherited, and will be facing in the future. Our vision is for rangatahi to lead the way in creating resilient, adaptable and self-determined indigenous communities - generating our own solutions based in our cultural knowledge and ways of living.

Where will the money go?

All fund raised go towards covering the cost of our flights, accommodation, travel insurance and local travel costs. Any extra will go towards making sure we have good kai to nourish us while we mahi. Total costs are approximately $4500 per team member.
