Doodle Cat

Project 2012-10-16 07:14:51 +1300

You may remember Ralphi from her wee project to raise funds to attend a comic workshop. Well now she's back with a new project - Doodle Cat is a 32 page children's book which she has created in collaboration with good friend and brilliant writer, Kat Patrick.

Doodle Cat is not your usual children's fiction. We reckon there aren’t enough books in the world that celebrate how amazing it is to be a kid, when the world is one long endless possibility, imagination is King, or Queen and farts are pretty serious comedy. It’s great that so much childhood literature prepares kids for the impending world of adulthood, everyone needs a moral compass, but it’s as important to remind kids that artistic expression counts.  Doodle Cat encourages children to create and imagine without limits, and to know that doodling is not a waste of time.

Doodle Cat is about getting youngsters and adults in dialogues that are unexpected, fun and get you looking at the world with those awesome big kid eyes. Whether it’s talking about what fart-flavoured ice-cream you’d like best, demonstrating your drawing skills or explaining what you think ‘sense of self’ means, Doodle Cat is for grown-ups and little ones alike.  Plus, you know. Doodle Cat is totally coffee-table book handsome. What a guy eh.

The story is hilarious and engaging, with some pages slipping into a comic like format (thank you kindly for sending Ralphi to the workshop) and others reverting back to full-page colour explosions. And Doodle Cat, the star of the show, is a small red scribble of a cat that will tug at the heartstrings of even the most fierce dog-lover.

We're working with Beatnik - a brilliant independent publishing house. We want the book to get the best treatment available, and be produced entirely locally wherever possible. Beatnik are pioneering intimate approaches to getting beautiful books out into the ether, and we can’t think of better place for Doodle Cat to get off the ground. It’s a bit of process, from design to printing and all the stages in between we’re looking at needing at least $13000 to get him looking squiggly-good. We know it’s a big ask, but we reckon Doodle Cat is destined for great things. Thanks very muchly for your help!
