About

Yoga Lane Studios

Project 2018-03-16 11:25:36 +1300

Thank you so much to everyone who has come down to Yoga Lane Studio’s so far we’ve been overwhelmed with the response. There are so many people interested in yoga in the Waiuku district and it’s great we could make a space where everyone can practise. The thing we’ve heard most often is how happy people are this space now exists for the community.

We want the Yoga Lane to be for everyone. Beginners are welcome in all classes just tell the teacher if it’s your first time. If you’re pretty experienced, tell the teacher and they’ll give you some advanced ways to practise.

We want yoga to be affordable for everyone which is why we’re pricing at fifteen dollars a class. Eventually we’d like to offer other concessions – more on that in a moment.

 The Main Studio

We’re really proud of the space we’ve created. Kirsty and I started this business with nothing but our own money but not for lack of trying.  We begged. We begged to borrow. When the banks said no to an overdraft we thought about stealing but decided it wasn’t the most solid foundation for a yoga studio. When people ask Kirsty how we paid for the studio she gives them a look and quietly says ‘meal planning’.

In a way we feel like we’ve already succeeded. We’ve paid our first month’s rent. We’ve had our Opening Day which was fantastic (thank you all for showing up). The full timetable is up and we’re taking all your suggestions about when you’d like classes. Please fire them all at us and we’ll change the schedule to suit as many as possible.

On the challenging side for us currently is the fact that we’ve kind of totally run out of money. We still owe for some of the construction costs and there are a few things (heat pump) that we didn't budget for in our initial build. We haven't finished constructing the shower and changing rooms, the builder, the electrician and plumber all have outstanding payments and we'd love to settle those bills so our business has a clean start.

Kirsty taking class

We knew going in to this that it wouldn’t be a million-dollar earner. There will always be people practising yoga so in theory it should tick over, but yoga is probably not going to sell out stadiums any time soon. We also knew that the bulk of the costs were in the construction and we were 90% prepared for them, we’ve just fallen short by about $16,800.

In 2019 we’d like the pricing structure to be $15 a class and $30 a week for as many classes as you want. We think that’s a good deal and we want people to be able to go to three or four classes a week when they want without it costing heaps.

But in order for us to survive to 2019 we’re hoping you might get behind us. We’ve got thirty days and if we don’t make target, we’ll have to think of another way and believe us – we’ve tried.

 Sincerely yours,

 Alex Behan

New Total

18/04/2018 at 12:19 PM

We have adjusted our required total on the PledgeMe campaign for the very real reason that we think we aimed too high. We were worried we weren't going to make target. So the new target is 8,800 which is enough to pay our outstanding bills (mostly).

It doesn’t enable us to finish the studio the way we'd like to but that's fine, she can remain a work in progress.

In the last week of our PledgeMe if we reach our target and there's room to go higher this is how we'll spend the money.

The next three thousand dollars will be spent (in order)

·       Finishing building the changing area with benches and hooks

·       Finishing sealing the hot room

·       Installing blinds in the hot room

·       Extending the floor in the main studio.

The next five thousand dollars after that is a heat pump to make sure we can nail the hot yoga temperatures in winter.

Any spare money and we’ll buy same mats. Lol.

So here we go folks, just twelve days or so to go.

Thank you all so much for your contributions, we're pretty sure we're going to make it so they're all going to count.

Quite a few people are really worried that we're going to completely go under but we can assure you that's not going to happen.

As the word is spreading about Yoga Lane Studios, new people are dropping in all the time and that means we're going to be able to pay our rent and power and keep open and offering classes.

We're here to stay and having adjusted our PledgeMe total to something that is now totally within reach, we've made sure we're honouring all our construction costs.

So thank you all.

Please continue to spread the word. We really appreciate it so much.

And we'll see you soon we hope for a class.
