The Waste Conversation

Project 2017-10-24 20:02:23 +1300

Wellington may be known as the coolest little capital in the world, but it is among the worst in New Zealand when it comes to waste disposal.

With our landfill quickly becoming full, we need to open the conversation and begin changing our habits to ensure Wellingtonians will be prepared for reducing our waste-to-landfill.

In early 2018 we will begin the conversation with a summit called The Waste Conversation.

The Waste-ed summit will bring together local low waste initiatives and inspirational success stories in waste reduction. It will include talks from change leaders, workshops with local change makers and action planning with local councillors. Join us to get excited and shape the waste free future of Wellington.

Don't miss out on the most important event of 2018. Make sure you are part of the movement to see Wellington become NZ's leading city in low-waste living.

By supporting this campaign you are supporting a waste-free Wellington, and truly the Coolest Little Capital in the world.

Lets start the conversation and bring Wellington waste issues to the frontline where it belongs.

WE HAVE PLEDGED!

Jemma, Sarah and I cannot thank you enough for supporting us in this campaign. We truly believe that there is a waste free future for Wellington and with your support we are a litte bit closer to making that dream a reality.

Today Sarah and I pitched The Waste Conversation to the Waste Forum, a local non for profit that provides a forum where commercial operators, council officers and elected reresentatives can network and share information about resource recovery, waste collection, disposal and minimisation in a co-operative way. The response and feedback around The Waste Conversation was 100% positive, so we are super excited.

We still have 3 days to go on our Pledge Me Campaign and you can still pledge. All the money raised will go directy to The Waste Conversation, so please keep sharing and pledging so together we can make The Waste Conversation awesome!

Love

Ali

ps. Sorry about the quality of our video, but we didn't have the amzing Jenn from Folkyeah to help us.

Time for some new rewards!!!

19/11/2017 at 10:35 PM

With only 7 days to go, we thought it may be time to list a few more rewards.

If you are Wellington based the beautiful Carrie McGlaughlin from Cradle Pilates has offered a 10 trip pass to her amazing Pilates classes. Open, stretch, strengthen and re-align your body or purchase an "experience" gift for someone you love this Christmas. Not so sure Pilates is for you but have always wanted to try? Carrie is also offering a 1 on 1 class so you can give it a go. We only have 1 of each of these rewards so get in quick!

Looking for Christmas presents that leave less impact on the world? Check out our Boomerang Bag and Waste-ed workshop rewards and our amazing Waste-ed Bathroom kit, which includes a bamboo toothbrush, natural deoderant and moisturiser so you can start (or continue) your own waste free journey.

OUr Common Sense vouchers are going super fast so Pledge today (perfect Christmas gift for that someone who has everything).

Thanks to everyone who has pledged so far. We are super excited to be on the final push for our campaign BUT still need loads of help in reaching our target. Please share amongst all of your friends and family so we can make The Waste Conversation a reality.

Love

Jemma, Sarah and Ali :)

Everyone keeps asking us what this Waste Conversation is all about…..

18/11/2017 at 11:01 AM

…. Soooo we thought we would explain ourselves a little better.

Sarah, Jemma and I met over a mutual hate of plastic and a mutual love of having a beer and a chat. At the beginning of the year with some other amazing humans we established and grew the Wellington Boomerang Bag community. Through our Boomerang Bag connections we began to notice a constantly occurring conversation around waste… “we want to reduce our waste footprint, but we don’t know how or it’s too hard or nothing gets recycled anyway… etc etc etc”. People didn’t know where their waste came from and they had no idea what happened to it once they were done with it. We also found out that although WCC is doing a pretty good job with the cities waste, they are fighting a losing battle because the landfill is almost full and Wellingtonians are pretty crap at dealing with their crap.

So being the passionate (and slightly crazy) trash talking women that we are, we decided that it would be our personal mission to get people talking about, and educated around waste. And so Waste-ed was born.

We don’t want to re-invent the wheel or charge off and make radical decisions. We want to start a conversation, open a dialogue between those in our community doing amazing things with waste and those in charge of how Wellington deals with it’s waste, so we can make plans and action ideas to making Wellington the first Waste Free city in New Zealand.

The Waste-ed summit will bring together local low waste initiatives and inspirational success stories in waste reduction. It will include talks from change leaders, workshops with local change makers and action planning with local councillors.

The main goal of the WCC Waste Minimisation plan is to reduce waste per person from 600kg to 400kg annually... together we can action this, and together we can make change in line with the council's’ targets.

We want all Wellingtonians to have the opportunity to be part of a brave new world where waste is more than a commodity.

If you’ve already pledged, thank you for your support so far. If it’s not too much to ask, please help us out a little more by sharing this update, and telling your friends what we are up to :)

Waste-ed Workshops

05/11/2017 at 5:44 PM

It can often be a battlefield figuring out how and where to dispose of your household rubbish. What does the triangle mean? Can cardboard be composted? Does recycling need to be rinsed? What will happen to the rubbish once it leaves the footpath?

At Waste-ed we want to make sure that you have the right information so you can actively take control of how you deal with your personal waste. This is why we have created our Let’s Get Sorted workshop.

Our December Let’s Get Sorted Workshop dates are locked in so you can start your New Year knowing that you are making the right decisions around the disposal of your household rubbish.

Pledge on a Let’s Get Sorted Workshop reward and join us for an interactive and informative workshop to sort through rubbish and questions, so we can make smarter, more sustainable choices and stop digging ourselves into the ground.

If these dates don’t work for you, no problem, 2018 dates will be released before Christmas or get a group of friends together and we can bring a Waste-ed workshop to you.
