Tabitha Dombroski Funds For The John Cranko Schule

Project 2017-07-25 21:26:40 +1200

Hi my name is Tabitha Dombroski, I’m 17 and this September I am heading off to train at a prestigious ballet school, The John Cranko School in Stuttgart, Germany. It is the second most sought after school at The Prix de Lausanne after the Royal Ballet School. Most students are scouted from big ballet competitions overseas and very few get in via audition video. So I feel very privileged to have been given direct entry via audition video. I feel this is my ultimate ballet school because they train in hardcore vaganova style and they do a fair amount of modern/contemporary work which I love and would never want to let go of. The goal after my time at the school, is to then get a job in a European ballet company. The qualification I will obtain from The John Cranko Schule will make me a state qualified ballerina making a job in a European Ballet company a very realistic goal.

I started ballet at the age of 3 and in a short space of time was dancing almost every day, doing many different styles of dance. I couldn’t get enough. I knew from a very early age that dance was going to be my career.

I trained with Wellington Dance Academy (Formerly Paula Hunt Dance), sitting all my RAD exams and attaining 95% for all three advanced level exams. When I was 10, I successfully auditioned for the scholars programme at The New Zealand School of Dance, and became an associate three years later. I have now enjoyed 7 years with NZSD, entering their full time classical programme when I was 16. While studying at NZSD I was selected to represent the school at the Assembleé Internationale in Toronto, Canada. This was such a highlight to work alongside top ballet dancers from 21 schools from all over the world and something I will remember forever. I, along with 3 other classmates took over a piece called ‘Curious Alchemy’ choreographed by NZSD graduate Loughlan Prior who went onto The Royal New Zealand Ballet.

My family's financial circumstances changed dramatically at the end of last year. I have been supporting myself by working 2 jobs. I have 8 private lesson students which I teach on a Sunday and I clean the studios at NZSD which gets me up at 5:30am. The cost of my tuition in Stuttgart will be covered by the German government however I do need to cover the cost of my hostel / living costs.

To me and my mum (who has been my biggest supporter) this would mean the world. Ever since I can remember I have always wanted to end up dancing in Europe, and now after years of hard work and determination a door has opened for me to go there. The John Cranko Schule ranked 5th in the 2017 ballet education top ten ballet schools in the world and it is a dream come true to get train there. It is absolutely the best step I could take towards becoming a professional ballerina.
