Hillside Dwellers is project based in the Philippines with the support of groups from New Zealand and abroad who help build and design new and innovative ways to tackle poverty, injustice and promote sustainable futures for the communities we work with. Our cross-cultural project allows us to invite the opportunity for Young and mature New Zealand's to take part of our Architectural project. Through this we are able to expand our outreach to not only benefit the communities in the Philippines but also here in New Zealand- our method is to develop the skills of local New Zealanders, in the hopes it will challenge them to tackle local issues, whilst serving our project partners in the Philippines. As part of this project we have two sites, with different briefs, one is located in Baguio amongst a squatter community- (our building aims to help facilitate education, basic healthcare in a church building which already is an important part of this community). Our second site is located in a UNESCO world heritage site, we aim to build an Agriculture centre to help local farmers with the protection of their sacred terraces, whilst also developing the growth in their Agricultural industry. As part of our project, we have organised exchange programmes for Local New Zealanders to take part in the process of design and build to not only learn but inspire them into a socially driven career path.
