Marking Life's Stages - Book Launch And Short Film

Kia Ora, Welcome to the Book launch and short film production of ‘Marking Life's Stages’ The Mystery of Rites of Passage. Inspiring and empowering people through Rites of Passage Work. www.markinglifesstages.com

This book and film will touch your heart with true stories
and give you tools for your family and community.

My name is Jay Horton and together with my father Jim we have produced this book over the past 2 years. It is a book of many voices with key inspirations and teachings from internationally known authors including; Don Bowak, Bill Plotkin, Dr Arne Rubinstein, Melissa Michaels as well as personal accounts from Rites of Passage facilitators. This is a true and heartfelt book that shares deeply. We are now ready to launch it into the world. As part of this launch we are creating a short film.

We tell the story of the Rites of Passage Foundation (RoPF) which runs nature based coming of age camps for youth and trainings for adults in Golden Bay, New Zealand. This community is part of a network of world leaders in social and emotional literacy training for youth and families. Over the last 20 years they have created a pan cultural multi day event that really works.

Some Background:

I have had a long history with this dedicated community; my father Jim and I are some of the founders. Since I was 16 I have been in and around nature based transformational workshops, first as a cooks assistant, then as a participant, then as a facilitator and part of the administrative team. www.ropf.org.nz

I am a photographer, graphic designer and have over ten years experience in video production with my own business. www.pheye.co.nz I am thrilled to be creating a film to tell this story and I need your help spreading the word and gathering the resources.

We have a budget that is in tiers; our intention is to raise at least $6,000.00 NZ Dollars which will cover a NZ focussed promotion, but a larger budget will allow us to weave together more of the people and programs from around the world that are spread throughout this story.

This book came to life through the collaboration of a global network of rites of passage organisations that we have helped to interlink. That is why our preferred outcome of this fundraising campaign would include these relationships. We see that the global connections and shared visions are an essential part of introducing the value of rites of passage work to mainstream youth development and educational institutions. Together we stand strong in proving how this work changes lives.

1st Tier - $6,390.00 - Essential project funding - This will allow us to produce a video telling the core story and create a campaign to launch the book. Most of the costs are in wages, as we raise more we will be able to do more : )

Total $6,000.00

+ Pledgme fees 6.5%    Total                   $6390.00

2nd Tier - This involves travel to Australia to interview significant supporters, including authors who are in the book. e.g. Dr Arne Rubinstein www.drarne.com , Steve Biddulph (Author - Raising Boys, Raising Girls, Manhood, Fatherhood), Pathways Foundation www.pathwaysfoundation.org.au, Paul Henley, Leonie Deus and more...

3rd Tier - This involves travel to Australia, Canada and the USA. Extra filming and editing re-connecting with a range of other programs that we talk about in the book and that have informed and supported our development. E.g. Youth Passageways www.youthpassageways.org, Melissa Michaels, www.bdanced.com, Jason Geoffrion www.mensleadershipalliance.comBret Stephenson

Endorsements for the book and the Rites of Passage Foundation;

This book captures the essence and importance of rites of passage from a variety of perspectives. It is a powerful testament to the relevance for marking all of life stages in these modern times. I give it to all the families who participate in our teen rites of passage programs as an importance reference to understand what their son and their family is going through. Many of the men who attend our programs purchase a copy as well. For anyone looking to expand and enhance meaning-making in their life transitions, this book is a must read.

"Rites of passage were always the crucial step in producing what we lack today.  Enough mature, caring, non-self-centred adults to carry our future.  This book is unprecedented in my reading over 40 years in the field of family psychology.  Deep, rich, diverse, and coming from people with enormous experience in this kind of youth work, it fills a gap in the culture itself. “

Steve Biddulph, author of Raising Girls, Raising Boys, and The New Manhood. Australia

“Marking Life’s Stages is an interesting and useful new way of looking at bringing back coming of age rituals to modern youth. I found it a one-stop shop—a number of useful components related to rites of passage. Besides taking time to educate readers on the basics of initiation work, the authors also provide an in depth description of how the TRACKS Program has woven these archetypal dynamics into a workable modern approach. Even better, Stages offers a number of other ROP specialists’ views on the field, bringing to mind the classic Betwixt and Between. Finally, I enjoyed the stories of how the TRACKS founders and key staff walked their own journeys, and how they have brought that awareness into their work with youth. Marking Life’s Stages works for experienced ROP practitioners and good old fashioned parents.”

“With the help (and voices) of many collaborators, Jim Horton has crafted an extraordinary guidebook for supporting boys, girls, and teens through the prodigious challenges, trials, and opportunities of growing whole in the twenty-first century. This small book makes an immense contribution to reclaiming the magic and promise of adolescence, the rediscovery of true adulthood, and the reinvention of healthy human societies.”
