Onerahi! Sign Makeover

Project 2012-10-04 01:42:22 +1300

I have lived in Onerahi since 1990 and I love it here, so much in fact that I created a bit of attention.

1 year ago two friends, my partner and I made the “ONERAHI!” sign.

The Hollywood-esque Onerahi! sign is situated below the old money factory in Whangarei on the way to Onerahi. The old backing from a store sign had been left empty and gathering gorse for the past almost 7-8 years until I got a crazy idea to put up a sign, I had been thinking it needed something on it for a long while. I acquired some old promo signage from my work and kept it at home until the idea came to me. One night I cut out the letters and we went out and created the sign many in Onerahi have come to love.

I am still getting complements on it even one year on. Only a few complaints, the hill side is covered in gorse and that it should be made permanent.

PROJECT

The project that I would like to continue with would be to make a permanent sign for Onerahi.
I want to make the sign from plywood and paint it so that it stands out and get it back up in the same place or closer to the road so that it is easier to see, with solar powered spotlights so that the sign can be seen at night.

I would also like to be able to clear the hillside of as much of the undesirable plants as possible and then plant New Zealand native plants along the side of the hill to create a much needed facelift to the entrance to Onerahi. I have already started work on the clearing the area surrounding, a friend and I have already spent 3 hours destroying gorse and clearing the hillside. And it already looks a darn site better.

WHERE THE MONEY IS REQUIRED

For this task I will require solar powered spotlights with long lasting batteries, poles for the lights to be positioned high as to deter theft, concrete, plywood, screws, paint, paint brushes, petrol for chainsaws, money to hire a truck to remove the rubbish and disposal, money to hire equipment and also refreshments for as many volunteers I can round up, native plants and fertilizer.  Essentially I will be looking at achieving around $3000 to cover all costs.  If we make more than my desired goal we will go above and beyond what I already have planned.

REWARDS

See to the side for the rewards, I will post a thank you note the Facebook page (https://www.facebook.com/ONERAHI.SIGN).

TO BE CONFIRMED REWARD

I am thinking of creating a plaque with donator’s names on it for the area as a thank you.
This plaque will be over and above the original target, I will be focusing as much money into the area as possible to create a fantastic entrance to ONERAHI!

Onerahi! sign is UP!

28/08/2013 at 10:01 AM

We have recently been able to get the Sign erected. It took some time as I have had a lot on my plate recently. We got it painted and placed up about a month ago. Thank you to all who have contributed and keep watching for further updates. We have still got the solar powered lights to go up and still have the planting to be done.

Thank you all and thank you for your patience.
