Ride Of Passage
Project 2017-05-01 15:19:42 +1200
We are a passionate group of girls who want to help build a healthy, stronger bond between foster kids and their parents, and provide a way to build essential skills that every Kiwi Kid needs- such as resilience and belief in one’s self. We will be providing a brand new bike for 3 foster kids supported by the organisation Fostering Kids NZ. We see learning to ride a bike as a rite of passage, hence our project’s name. Bike-riding symbolises a large part of many childhoods and the journey of growing up, developing and becoming more independent. It is an opportunity all children should have for further personal development and building strong relationships within families. Parents helping their foster child to ride a bike strengthens their bond and provides a fond memory for the rest of their life.
We are trying to raise enough money to purchase three bikes for three different foster families. We will build the bikes and give them to three foster children between the ages of four and twelve years old (once they've been checked by a mechanic). As a team, we will assemble and personalise the bikes for the foster kids using decorations like their favourite colour or superhero.
We’ve chosen to gift bicycles because we believe learning to ride a bike is an important rite of passage for every kiwi kid of all family backgrounds to experience. The experience and skill is remembered forever, many people remember the childhood memories of themselves learning to ride a bike, and the bonding experience with their mum or dad. We also see it as a skill that teaches resilience, belief in one’s self and perseverance. By choosing bikes, we hope to give these foster children the opportunity to create valuable memories. Whether it’s learning to ride a bike for the first time with training wheels, or training for the Weet-Bix Tryathlon, riding a bike can teach a child core, essential skills that are important both physically and emotionally.
A wide range of rewards are being offered to anyone who donates to our campaign (such as movie tickets, baking, and personalised thank you cards) as a token of our gratitude for your generosity and kind donations.
