About Double the Quota! It's election year. Let's get this done.

Project 2017-02-12 18:53:01 +1300

UPDATE: It's the last day of the campaign! In the small hours of the morning we passed our first stretch goal of $10k and we're now looking towards our stretch goal of $15k. Brilliant! We're really excited at how much more we'll be able to do together. Scroll down to read about what we can do with our fighting fund for every cent we raise above $10k.

======

We’ve all come a long, long way since the Double The Quota campaign began in June 2013. The campaign goal has gone from radical to mainstream to being almost conservative. In fact, while Labour and United Future have strong policies of doubling the quota, the Greens and TOP would double the already increased quota to a total of 2000 people.

In late September New Zealand will go to the polls. This is our last opportunity before 2019 to pressure the government for a substantial increase of the refugee quota. This year is our last chance to do our bit, and we need your help.

Today, Murdoch and the Doing Our Bit team are kicking off our election campaign. How do you want to be involved? Some of you may want to join in our activism and awareness raising work, while others may wish to contribute to campaign costs, and allow us to amplify the message in the streets and on social media. Some will be interested in doing both.

We’ve run this campaign with a small, committed team and a huge network of volunteers, supporters, and influencers. Today, we draw on that network to start our election year push.

So where do you fit? Have a look at the table below. If you are a 4 or a 5, you’re a refugee activist. Why not sign-up to get more directly involved in Doing our Bit? This may mean sharing a few key online posts, or asking your local MP if they’ll support doubling the quota, or just talking with your community about why increasing the quota is important. We’ll make sure you know what we are doing, and how you can get involved and make a difference.

We’ve also been approached by a lot of great people who are super busy with work or fighting for other causes, but want to help. For these supporters we have launched this PledgeMe campaign where you can contribute to our fighting fund.

In return our supporters receive a range of rewards such as our booklet on election time refugee activism, a Double The Quota t-shirt, stickers, poster prints, and a session with Murdoch and his communications advisor to inform your own values-based strategy.

If we get funded for our full ask then we’ll use the $5000 for:

  • rewards and extra booklets and materials for people who have more time than money ($1500)

  • pushing the message out through a small poster campaign and social media marketing ($2500)

  • resources - airfares, bus fares – to travel to other cities to host campaign events ($600)

  • PledgeMe and credit card fees ($400)

We’ve got a few stretch goals. Here's what we will do if we get twice our basic ask - $10,000:

  • rewards and extra supporter packs for people who have more time than money ($2300)

  • pushing the message out through a poster campaign and social media marketing ($3500)

  • resources - airfares, bus fares – to travel to other cities to host campaign events ($800)

  • PledgeMe and credit card fees ($800)

  • stipend to support Murdoch for a living wage so doesn’t have to work as many hours at other work ($2000)

  • Other low-cost options fed to us from our supporter team ($600)

If we get $15,000 we'll aim to do the following:

  • rewards and extra supporter packs (including t-shirts) for people who have more time than money ($3500)
  • pushing the message out through a poster campaign, targeted mail drops and social media marketing ($5000)
  • resources - airfares, bus fares, accommodation, venue hire – to visit other cities to host campaign events ($1000)
  • PledgeMe and credit card fees ($1200)
  • stipend to support Murdoch for a living wage so doesn’t have to work as many hours at other work ($3000)
  • Other low-cost options fed to us from our supporter team ($1300)

We’ve never sought funding from supporters before – though some generous people have come to us direct. The biggest contribution has been from the Quakers, who awarded Murdoch a Peace Service grant for 2016.

The campaign will continue to the election whether we reach our pledge or not, but the pledge will give us more resources to amplify our voices.

Remember: this election is the last chance we have to increase the quota before the 2019 triennial review. Maybe our politicians can wait that long, but many of those displaced by war and persecution can not. When Trump is cutting the number of places for refugees in the US, New Zealand needs to step up.

Please offer us your support, both by pledging as well as becoming an activist.

Many thanks,

Murdoch Stephens & the Doing Our Bit team.

Doing Our Bit is a charitable trust run by Murdoch Stephens and based in Wellington, New Zealand. Murdoch has the help of a small team of advisors who assist with communications, strategy, marketing, research and design. His writings on the refugee quota have appeared in every major newspaper in the country, academic journals and international press such as Forced Migration Review.

Rewards

Here's the booklet we made last year. The election one will look similar (A6, landscape, 80pages) but with the t-shirt art as cover:

Doing Our Bit booklet 2016

The t-shirts will be white, AS-colour brand, classic, relaxed fit crew neck straight style. We'll contact you after our campaign to get your preferred size(s). The image on the t-shirt will be this:

Here's what out stickers look like - we've just added a pledge for those keen to get their hands on a whole lot of them...

Note: for international donors consider whether we could send you a pdf of the booklet instead, or send the packs to friends in New Zealand to lessen postage expenses, or even add $10-$20 to cover those costs. Thanks!

Updates

It's the last day of the campaign + event tonight!

03:51PM Tue 21/03/17 on Double the Quota! It's election year. Let's get this done.

In the small hours of the morning we passed our first stretch goal of $10k and we're now looking towards our stretch goal of $15k. Brilliant! We're really excited at how much more we'll be able to do together.

Today, we're hosting a closing event between 7-10pm to get the campaign resourced, and in turn, to resource our supporters with the tools to show their support to us. Here's the event page: https://www.facebook.com/events/607813559408964/

The event - which coincides with Race Relations day - will be livestreamed so even if you're not in Wellington check in, spread the word online and help us reach our stretch goals of $15k and beyond. All details on how funds will be spent are on our PledgeMe page.

Remember, this is our last chance to get this done until 2019. We can't wait, and those seeking protection for themselves and their families shouldn't have to. Speakers include:

    • Laura O'Connell-Rapira (ActionStation
    • Paleeza Rasheed (ChangeMakers Refugee Forum)
    • Emily Writes (author)
    • Ruth Mundy (musician)
    • Brannavan Gnanalingam (author)
    • Justin Lester (Wellington mayor)
    • Rebecca Stewart (co-founder of Pomegranate Kitchen)
    • Sarah Jane Parton (artist working with Ronhingya refugees in Malaysia)
    • Vorn (accordionist)

Refreshments will be provided, but we are going to hold off on the alcohol until after the 10pm finishing line when we head to a nearby venue.
