Transport Blog Website Update And Rebranding

Project 2017-01-24 21:35:04 +1300

The Transport Blog was created eight years ago as a personal journal.

Today the Blog is a leading forum for not just transport issues, but for ideas and discussion about what sort of city Auckland can be. On most days we have over 5,000 page views. We have published over 5,000 posts. Perhaps our greatest achievement is the respectful, informed debate in the comments section. We have logged close to 200,000 comments. Thank you!

The Blog has successfully influenced big projects like City Rail Link and smaller projects like O’Connell Street, and rapid deployment of bus lanes. We have also spearheaded and contributed to public campaigns like The Congestion Free Network and The Coalition for More Homes.

While the big wins are rewarding, it’s the ongoing day-to-day public debate about issues that can improve the city that inspires us. From PT operations, street design and parking policy - to planning and housing issues, we like to cover issues that are underrepresented by conventional media.

We believe the timing is right to transform ‘the Blog’ into something that is more influential and more accessible and responsive to our readers.

We will be rebranding to our Greater Auckland incorporated society name which better reflects the range of our mission and activities.

We are seeking funding to create a new website with the following improvements:

  • Better mobile user experience

  • Better entry-points to our campaigns and legacy posts

  • Easier access to the diversity and archive of blog posts

  • More information about events and initiatives happening in the city

We need the money to pay for the website redesign as well as hosting and other business infrastructure. We also want to build online tools to help people participate in local issues and to better connect readers and members of Greater Auckland.

Funds raised will also be used to pay people for their work. We would like to be able to reimburse contributors for their extraordinary effort, for example travel to Wellington, participation at conferences, and for specific campaign work.

We're are asking for $20,000 to help us take this next step.

Please lend your support.

Matt

Introducing the Congestion Free Network 2.0

04/04/2017 at 2:02 PM

We’re currently putting the finishing touches on the second iteration of our Congestion Free Network (CFN) and we intend to launch this formally on Monday morning. Here is an excerpt from our summary document that we’ll be releasing along with the map we’ve developed.

And as a teaser, the core of the map.

You may have noticed that one of the options on our fundraiser was a collectible CFN poster. The full version of this is what people who choose that option will get. It will be A2 size and on high quality print on proper poster stock and includes shipping – depending on the location, we may even deliver some personally.

We’re really excited about launching the CFN 2.0 and hope you are too and intend to use some of the money from this fundraising drive to help us spread it to a wider audience

Regular surveys

30/03/2017 at 11:01 AM

Over the years we’ve seen a number of random polls and surveys covering different aspects related to transport from media outlets, the council and other advocacy groups like the AA. From the results we’ve seen, there appears to be overwhelming support for investment in public transport to improve transport in Auckland, but as each poll is slightly different and they only happen sporadically it can be hard to draw a lot from them.

As such, we want to use part of the money we raise to pay for regular professional, independent surveys of the Auckland population. We would like to understand what Aucklanders actually want in transport, rather than what groups with vested interests want.

We haven’t worked out exactly what questions we want to ask yet but here are some are some of the ideas we’re thinking about:

  • What proportion of funding do you think should go into roads, PT, walking and cycling?
  • What do you think currently happens? (vs reality)
  • Rank the most important transport projects for Auckland from 1-5:
    • Northwest Busway
    • Isthmus & Airport rail
    • Additional Waitemata Harbour Crossing
    • Rail to the North Shore
    • East West Link
    • Warkworth to Wellsford motorway
    • Penlink
    • Regionwide safe cycleways
    • Rail Electrification to Pukekohe.
