Help Secure The Future Of The Riverton Environment Centre!
Project 2017-01-24 15:05:03 +1300
We are currently embarking on an exciting plan to buy our Environment Centre building that we have rented for 15 years, and we really need your help.
ABOUT US
We are a group of passionate people on New Zealand’s south coast who care about simple living and are dedicated to protecting our environment.
The South Coast Environment Society is an umbrella organisation for a number of community based environmental groups and projects in Riverton. Including the Open Orchard Project, which has saved more than 700 varieties of heritage fruit trees since 2007, school education programmes, community orchards, an organic food co-op, a seed saving network, an annual Heritage Harvest Festival and estuary care projects, among others.
Collectively we operate the oldest continually operating environment centre in New Zealand and are rated the best in the country by the Ministry for Environment.
We are a vibrant, positive group, who are dedicated to being an example of what a small community of less than 2,000 people can achieve.
HOW YOU CAN SUPPORT US
If 300 people like you, will join us in giving an average of $250, we can reach our target of $75K before our 28th Feb 2017 purchase deadline. Every little bit helps, so please give what you can.
Plus, you will get a charitable donation tax receipt so you can claim 33% of your donation back! (i.e. if you give $300 you can claim $100 back).
We are trying to raise at least $20,000 on Pledgeme as this the minimum we need to secure the purchase and to show that we have the support of our community.
This fundraiser will enable us to buy our building debt free, which is a huge step forward and means no more rent. But even more importantly, it will show a huge amount of public support for what we do and enable us to seek additional grants from public funders to support the next phase of the project to renovate the building.
Any donations over $75,000 will go directly towards the second phase of the project.
If you would like to make a bequest or are interested in commercial sponsorship, please get in touch.
The overall project will enable us to become more financially sustainable, ensure our long term presence in Southland, help support our ongoing environmental projects in this ecologically diverse part of the country, and save a character building in the process.
Please Note: We have had a formal feasibility study completed to help map out the path forward and it came back very positive, and assured us that our project is achievable.
We hope you can join us on this exciting journey.
PHASE 1
- Buy our building debt free: $75K fundraising required

The Longwood Loop needs your support!
28/05/2021 at 7:13 PM
Hello friends and supporters,
I am reaching out to say that have a new campaign up and running! The Longwood Loop is a community food resilience loop based out of our Environment Centre in Riverton, and small community trading posts in small towns around the Longwood Mountain. To get this project really on the road, we are raising money to buy an Electric Van that will be our mobile farmer's market, which will provide support for small growers and craftspeople in Southland, and bring more good food to small towns in Western Southland.
We have been given $36,000 from the Community Trust of Southland, and are raising the final $15,000 through Pledgeme. 79 friends and supporters have Pledged just over $10,000 so far, and with just three days left to get over the line, we would love your support if you want to give it again. If you have already done so (we have seen some names pop up!) thank you very much!!!
To learn more about the Longwood Loop and to make a Pledge, click here!
Your support with buying our building was immense, and over the past four years our society has thrived and grown, able to take big steps forward knowing that our centre was safe and a home to our society and projects for good.
Thank you again!
