About

Curiosity Raver

Project 2016-12-27 23:30:01 +1300

This is the time of year where I head to one of my favourite festivals (the NZ Regional Burning Man) and be weird in a field for a week. This year I'll be working on my first solo art project and I'd love your support!

I am going to be building a roaming VJ rig to beam out live videos and lasers towards dancers at the Kiwiburn Festival (or anywhere really!). This project will be built for Kiwiburn 2017 but could be used for future events anywhere.

The theme this year is "The Robots Are Coming" and yes..yes they are.

This art piece will be joining a contingency of other portable party rigs (such as a sound system and a lighting rig) and together we will roam the festival site to entertain and delight!

Mission Commander VJ Kellective will be mixing up videos from NASA archives and other curious treats along with dressing up in her space cadet outfit.

Rewards

There are a few space themed goodies available. Check out these beautiful retro space prints. I'll get your one of choice high quality A3 printed and mailed to you. You can also select a NASA patch. Or perhaps you are a DJ or promoter and have an event coming up - for the $100 reward i'll work with you to produce some custom motion graphics for you.

Posters Courtesy NASA/JPL-Caltech. Public domain. Link to view all posters is here http://www.jpl.nasa.gov/visions-of-the-future/ note - not designed by me! My offer is to get this high quality printed and mailed to you.

What is Kiwiburn?

Kiwiburn is the New Zealand regional Burning Man event. It is Kiwiburn is 100% volunteer run! Everything at the festival is built, designed and run by the people who turn up. Like Burning Man, this is a temporary city that comes together and evolves every year by those who contribute to it.

Kiwiburn is a participatory festival, where we – the participants – bring and make the things that we want to have here. There are no central stages or headline acts, no queues and very few crowds, just a series of surprises. Every performance and art piece is there because somebody has decided to bring it and put in the effort to make it happen.

Not attending?

Since this is a portable rig I can actually set it up anywhere. I could apply to bring it along to other events (like Cuba Dupa, or Newtown Festival) or wander Courtenay Place with it *just because I can*.

Who am I?

VJ Kelly Kellective (mission Commander of the Curiosity Raver).

I am a VJ (video jockey!) who plays at regular club nights in Wellington. I've produced and live-mixed videos for Bicep (UK), Mary Velo (Germany), Iron Curtis (UK), Advanced Human (AU), and local heroes Ugly Disco, Paul Berrington, Heylady, Paul Dockery, K2K, Keepsakes, Verdi, Paige Julia and Confusiohm.

I’m involved in the local burner scene helping do live videos and production for various parties and festivals. I generally lend my gear out to these nights free of charge. This is a chance to give back and help fund more gear that I can then bring to future parties!

Updates 3

(somewhat) successful mission

15/02/2017 at 4:41 PM

Hello!

I'm back from Kiwiburn and have now fully recovered so here is an update and some photos.

Some of you will know about pre festival madness and how there is never enough time to do all the thigns or be as prepared as you want to be...So i get there and realise i have left behind the main connector point between the battery pack and projector. BUT being kiwiburn..i happened to be camped next to Camp 8 Bit (a camp for electronics geeks) I was able to convice a partially clothed, rainbow-cowboy-hat wearing man to help me out. He cut up some of my wires and reconnected them using this neat no-solder solution. (Thanks Sam!) In a funny side story, I was supposed to be wheeling my project around with them because they had a portable sound rig but they had forgotten the wheels for their project. Such is life!

i took the raver out briefly on 2 of the nights but wasn’t able to capture many photos (because then my camera had died).

Here are some though of me projecting onto people and trucks!

And some post shots of the project in my back yard.

What now?

We’ll I'm going to treat this as a prototype and now rebuild the trolley part and tidy up a lot of the cables. I hope to be able to show you v2 out in Wellington some time!

Posters are being printed, NASA patches are making their way to NZ and postcards from Mars will be sent out this week.

Thanks!

Thanks to all my supporters my baseline goal has been smashed!

Yesterday I purchased a 26 amp hour deep cycle battery (more expensive than I had thought) and my new mini projector arrived. Today we are doing lots of metallic spray painting (ive waited so long for a clear day!) and wiring up the battery. Today is also the last day I have to work on iteration 1 of the rover before it makes its first appearance (at Kiwiburn). No doubt later on i'll get to improve it and make it better.

While im waiting for paint to dry I am multitasking by hunting through NASA video archives for good footage.

Half way already!

17/01/2017 at 11:04 PM

Hi!

WOW what a great first 12 hours! I published this campaign while on my lunch break and now...it's almost midnight and I've hit half way already. I have a big grin on my face and the motivation to keep going.

More updates soon.

Thanks all <3 *space dreams*
