About

Bikes Welcome - Better Bike Parking, More People Riding Bikes, More Love.

Project 2016-11-02 13:34:04 +1300

The short story

Bikes Welcome want to make everyday bike-use easier, more attractive and ‘normal’.

NATIONWIDE!

Why? Because regular bike use is great for people, health, business, communities and the environment.  And it’s a fun way to get around.

BikesWelcome want to help businesses recognise and value their biking customers and help bike users get good bike parking where they need it.

Bikes Welcome will connect individuals and organisations with each other and the information they need to make bike parking happen.

And we’ll recognise, celebrate and share about businesses that welcome their bike-users.

How? By incorporating proven models used overseas we’ll engage bike users, businesses and councils to work together; seeking and seeing value; making it easy to do something good that will drive to change. Read on to find out what we have planned.

We've achieved our minimum: now let's go for gold!!!!

If we can raise a total of:

Then we can do this:

$3,000

We can design, print and post window stickers out to Bikes Welcome Businesses

$4,150

As well as the business window stickers, we can design and print postcards for bike users to handout to businesses, inviting them to find out more about the why, what and how of bike-using customers and bike parking.

$4,600

We can spread the word further and wider with posters and marketing material to enlist more bike users to be Bikes Welcome ambassadors

$11,310

We can get a hugely better website up and running, including a searchable on-line directory of bikes welcome businesses and an electronic 'invitation' to businesses

$13,670

We do all of the above plus we can produce a short video helping businesses recognise the value of bike using customers and the business benefits of becoming a BikesWelcome business.

  • These totals include the Pledge Me campaign overheads

BikesWelcome have engaged initial interest and support from bike users, businesses, organisations and councils. We need money to develop and launch the BikesWelcome program.  I want to start with Auckland, Wellington, Christchurch and Lower Hutt. We’ll start with Wellington and Lower Hutt (where we’ve received some grant funding); and then we will roll out to towns and cities according to where we have the most support.

Everyday bike use

Want to know more?

Who are we?

We are a Charitable Trust focused on helping businesses recognise the business value of bike-using customers and getting better bike parking.

helping business

Jo Clendon is the driving force behind BikesWelcome. As an everyday cyclist Jo got sick of having to do guerilla bike parking, and frustrated when businesses seemed to have no idea that they had customers who rode bikes and spent $$$.  She thinks that sometimes, being a bike-user is like being a super-hero with a secret identity: you look just like a regular person!

(watch our video for more on that one!)

I bike, I buy

So Jo was inspired to start BikesWelcome.

Bikes Welcome will help businesses to recognise, understand, value and support their bike using customers.

overview 9

Our website is www.bikeswelcome.org and it will give you an idea of what we want to achieve. Right now it is a pretty ameteur website.... we need to raise the $$$$ to make it better, especially to develop an online directory of BikesWelcome businesses!

What's the idea?

The more everyday cycling I do, the more I notice the times when there is no good bike parking.  Good bike parking can be hard to find.  And tricky to ask for…. Who do you ask?

We need bike lanes, and we need bike parking.  But somehow it seems to get overlooked or poorly implemented.  That is a missed opportunity.

When I see a bike, (or even a bike rack): outside a shop, cafe, library or school; it sends me the message: “hey, I could cycle here!”

Bike parking parks the seed

Inadequate bike parking is frustrating, it contributes to bike theft and it leaves me feeling kind of invisible.  And it is a missed opportunity to ‘market’ everyday biking.

subliminal marketing for everyday cycling

So I had this idea: I’d make it really easy for people to ask for bike parking.

…. And make it something you can do in a couple of minutes.

I’m calling it 2 minute advocacy.  I’m calling it ‘Bikes Welcome’

……..this is how will it work:

You are a bike user and you have a favourite cafe that doesn’t have good bike parking, so you hand them a postcard*, which entices them to visit bikeswelcome.org to learn more about the business benefits of biking customers and good bike parking; and invites them to become a BikesWelcome business.

You’re a business and Bikes Welcome has helped you understand the value of cycling customers.  Bikes Welcome has made it easier for you to arrange great bike parking for your customers and now you proudly display the ‘Bikes Welcome Business’ sticker and are listed in the online BikesWelcome Business directory.

You are biking to a new spot and you want to find a cycle friendly cafe to meet up at, so you search the Bikes Welcome Business directory on the Bikes Welcome website and find a BikesWelcome business to support.

*we will also provide 'e-postcards' for bike users who travel light.

A big part of the solution is making bike parking easier: easier to ask for, and easier to implement.  For bike parking in public spaces, we’ll connect users with their council, with information about how their council ‘does bike parking’, and how to request it.  For bike parking on private property, we’ll help users request quotations from reputable suppliers; and provide guidance on what makes good bike parking.  You’ll find some of this information on our website already, along with the criteria for becoming a Bikes Welcome Business.

What's in it for you?

As well as the chance to get better bike parking, and be valued as a bike-using customer, we have some great rewards to select from.  You'll also be the first to know when BikesWelcome are up and running, and the option to be among the first to use the 'two minute advocacy' approach.

And where we receive support from will determine where we go: our roll out priorities will ‘follow the money’....(although thanks to WCC we do have some funds to get started in Welly)

Thank You, we made it to our tier 2 goal. Awesome

28/02/2017 at 7:11 PM

Thank you all for your pledges and support.

Thanks to you we achieved our tier 2 goal and will now be able to design and print not only business stickers but also the postcard invitations for our Bikes Welcome ambassadors to handout.

There is a stack of stuff to do post campaign, so don't rush to your letterbox just yet.... it'll take me some time to get the goodies sorted, but rest assured it will be done.

So thanks again, and stay tuned because it's going to be AWESOME.  If you haven't already please like our Facebook page or follow our blog for updates.  And we tweet @bikeswelcome.

Less than 5 hours to go, can we make $5k?

28/02/2017 at 12:28 PM

We've still go some great rewards left, and less than 5 hours till pledges close at 5pm.  We'd like to hit $5,000.  So:

Please share, share, share, and share some more.

And stay awesome.

Go well, with thanks, Jo

Just keep peddling

27/02/2017 at 12:26 PM

Have you heard this saying?

It's a hill, get over it.

So here we are, we've hit our minimum target, which is like getting to the top of the first peak on our mountain range.  That is awesome. So let's take a minute and just be so happy and proud to have made it this far and that means you, yes you, because without you good people, the tally would be sitting at $0 (well maybe a bit more if I'd started eating the reward chocolate).

Awesome and well done and thank you.

Now, let's keep going!

Yes, why stop there, when we could do so much more with a bit more:

We've achieved our minimum: now let's go for gold!!!!

If we can raise a total of:

It would be so good to get a decent website. We've got some great rewards for businesses, so please please get your boss (or business partners) on board. Let them know that it can give them an advantage in the hiring game, as well as healthier, happier and more productive employees. And of course, it makes sense to attract biking customers too!

So who can you tell about this campaign? Please do, and let's turn your $3,000 into $10,000, so I can step away from the computer and seriously talk bike parking and the business benefits of biking with businesses!

And we've still got the great ground effect jacket left for some lucky person. Size small would suit women especially.

And we've got: Fair Trade Chocolate, Blend Coffee, Zoo Passes (AKL) Books, CAN Family Memberships, and RAW bars. So still plenty of goodies left for grabs.

6 days to go, let's go for gold!

22/02/2017 at 1:42 PM

Cripes! Less than a week left!

Thank you so much for pledging your support to our campaign.  It is an awesome way to encourage everyday bike use and get better bike parking.

If we make our target it means we can get started, if we can exceed the $3,000 minimum then we'll be able to do even more.  So let's aim high.  With that in mind I've added new rewards and am keenly promoting our business focused rewards.  Do you know a business who are, or who want to be bike friendly?  Please ask them to support this campaign, there are great rewards just waiting for them.  And what movers, shakers and influencers could you tell about Bikes Welcome?

Plus I've added T-shirts, aprons, shopping bags and bears.  All branded with our awesome 'yes I bike' design.  Check them out and grab yours.

And please share, share, share.  Tell everyone about our campaign, ask for their support, let them know you've pledged and they should too.

Thanks for your amazing support.  Jo

NEW REWARDS!!!!

19/02/2017 at 2:16 PM

Thank you to all you awesomely wonderful folk who have pledged and shared about our Bikes Welcome Pledge Me Campaign.

The countdown is on - less than 10 days to go until we hit our ALL OR NOTHING deadline of February 28th.

That's right, it's ALL or NOTHING AT ALL, meaning, if we don't achieve at least our $3000 target, we don't get a cent (and you don't pay a cent or get your awesome reward).

So to sweeten the deal and encourage even more people to pledge,  I've added some great new rewards featuring our awesome new YES, I BIKE! design.  Hope you love it, hope you want it.  And don't forget we have chocolate, coffee and books, plus some great partnership rewards and a beaut Ground Effects rain jacket, and a wall mounted toolset that will make your boss your cycling hero.  We'd love to see some businesses and employers jump on board with a pledge, so please think who you could ask to do that.

It was great to get a wee bit of press coverage this week, but it is word of mouth that makes crowd funding happen.  So:

Please help spread the word, and get as many people as you can to pledge.

It is truly a case of 'every little bit counts'.  Plus we like big bits too.

Thanks & happy riding!

You need to pledge to see this update.

Thanks everyone for your support so far.  And don't forget to spread the word.  Here's a link to some social shares you may like to choose from.  https://drive.google.com/drive/folders/0B1nWnFixaYnDdTZVYW1oZU9idk0?usp=sharing

Do you like home-baking?  It is hard to beat, and always the first thing I look for at a market or fair.  And I'm a great baker myself.  So I've added in some home baked goodness as rewards for your wonderful support.  Check them out!

Thanks everyone for your support so far.  And don't forget to spread the word.  Here's a link to some social shares you may like to choose from.  https://drive.google.com/drive/folders/0B1nWnFixaYnDdTZVYW1oZU9idk0?usp=sharing

And don't forget to follow us on Facebook and Twitter for all the latest.  Cheers, Jo
