The Kiwi Diary 2013

Project 2012-09-21 06:37:16 +1200

The Kiwi Diary 2013 has been nearly a year in the making, and now we need your help to print 3,000 copies and keep its inspirational content visible for 365 days of 2013!

The printing bill comes in at a scary $30,000+, but with your help we can still get the kiwi diary 2013 to print and share a year's worth of collaborative creativity.

Rachel Walker - Andrew vs. Summer

What is the kiwi diary?

The Kiwi Diary is a functional, A5, landscape, 250-page spiral bound diary to record your notes, thoughts, doodles and appointments. No matter how wired we are, we all still seem to need that handy little notebook for jotting things down!

Produced since 2005, The Kiwi Diary is a carefully curated publication which is all about celebrating and showcasing creativity, with a theme of good values, wisdom, and what truly matters - a healthy society and a healthy environment. Kiwi Diary uses art and inspiration as a vehicle to get us thinking about good values.

Every diary contains both english and te reo versions of the Treaty of Waitangi, and all days are in both languages.

The Kiwi Diary showcases content that increases awareness of important social and environmental issues, and is also designed to be inspiring, functional, and fun. Examples of content include Wetlands, the history of the Ecology of NZ, articles on how to attract native birds into your garden, honey bees, inspirational quotes from Sir Ed, Gottleib Braun-Elwert or Em Miazga, an article on the benefits of garlic, the 10 principles of sustainable building, and the latest amazing recipe from Fleurs Place, and more. The Kiwi Diary also gives space every year to community organisations, including  Frocks on Bikes, Inspiring Stories, the Dunes Restoration Trust, and Greenpeace, to name a few.

(Limited Edition print by Helena Sofia, one of our incredibly talented contributors and - one of the pledge rewards!)

Among our contributors are:

  • Niki Harre, Senior Lecturer in Social Psychology of Auckland University
  • Sean Weaver, Lecturer at Victoria University
  • Jer Thorpe, infographics Specialist for the New York Times
  • Articles and writing from Max Rashbrooke (inequality), Antony Kitchener (photos and essay on Wellingtons soup kitchen), Dr Renee Liang (on Sir Paul Callahan), Sarah Wadsworth (foraging), Tim Lucas (Rakiura), Martyn Pepperell, Sean Weaver, Julien Smith, and Ed Willis
  • Poetry: including Sarah Jane Barnett, Laura Williamson, Jan Kelly, Kathy Cumming, Kelvin Fowler, Rachel Rees
  • Recipes: Rachel Taulelei, Martin Bosley, Sarah Wadsworth, Lauraine Jacobs, Fleur Sullivan, Lou's epic loaf, Commonsenses' gluten-free bread & more
  • Art design and photography from maaaany incredibly talented people from around New Zealand.

The Kiwi Diary creation process is ongoing and isn't without its sacrifices, but the reward is sharing the goodness for a whole year with you!  We hope the 2013 diary can do its bit to encourage and inspire positive change. To paraphrase some old famous quotes about inspiration: Its about keeping beautiful plants growing in the garden of your mind, as our thoughts become our words, our words become our actions, our actions become our habits, and our habits become our values, and our destiny.
