2017 Craft Beer Calendar

Project 2016-10-16 18:45:58 +1300

Procrastination, a play in three acts:

<Melbourne GABS, mid-May>

We should really get started on the calendar earlier this year.

<SOBA Winter Ale Festival, June>

But, like, really. Beervana is coming, loads of people will be in town.

<October>

Shit. At least we’re still ahead of the first year, right?

¯\_(ツ)_/¯

We’re back - a little bit older but no more wiser - to celebrate the beautiful people that make Kiwi beer great with a charity calendar. Yes, just the one calendar. Two was folly and we are very sorry to Jed and everyone else for believing that was a reasonable idea to execute in a month.

This year, we’ll have one calendar, clothing optional. It's about quality, not quantity. Only one member of your team keen to get their kit off? Awesome. Prefer to keep your bits under wraps or just show a little skin? Chur. Ready to bare all and challenge Dave for the title of nakedest beer person? Sweet as. You’re all beautiful and it’s a privilege to include you in our humble calendar.*

Who?

Each month of the calendar will feature images of the people and places at the heart of this community - the brewers, the bartenders, the writers, and the fans. And yes, the beards! Jess and Megan are hoping to be more efficient producers after two years of cat-herding. The long-suffering Jed Soane (Photographer) and Michelle Burke (Beard Stylist/Muse) are back, and we look forward to welcoming a crop of models old and new.

Why?

The Sexual Abuse Prevention Network (SAPN) began as a collaboration between Wellington Rape Crisis, Wellington Sexual Abuse HELP Foundation, and WellStop. This year, they left the nest and became an independent registered charity. The network seeks to prevent sexual violence by using education and preventative strategies that promote healthy sexuality. SAPN is a steering group member of the 'Who Are You? Safer Bars Project' and delivers the programme's ethical bystander training. The Safer Bars Project promotes identification and prevention of sexual violence within hospitality settings through the inclusion of specific sexual violence-related training material.

This year, we are delighted to also offer the opportunity for bars/groups and individuals to book one of SAPN’s excellent courses. 'It's Our Business' is a four hour sexual violence prevention programme for people in the hospitality and event industiry. It is suitable for owners, managers, bar staff, venue hosts, or security staff. The course focuses on alcohol-facilitated sexual violence, with an emphasis on host responsibility and ethical bystander intervention. Alcohol is a drug commonly used to faciliate sexual violence. Professionals working in environments where people are drinking are in an ideal position to play a postive role in sexual violence prevention, but it isn't always easy to know what to do when you spot a potentially unsafe situation. This workshop helps participants develop strategies to make their venue or event safer and skills to identify unsafe situations and take action to intervene safely.

But don't take our word for it - here's what participants had to say:

'I can think of situations in the past where I should have intervened, but didn't know how. Now I have the mindset that intervention is important, and not always a hard thing to do.'

'Knowledge is power. These situations occur and people need the tools to know how to act.'

How?

If you want to model or shoot for us, visit our website for more details and get in touch via email or twitter. In the interests of diversity, we're giving preference to collaborations involving multiple bars, breweries, distributors, writers, regulars, and/or other personalities. If you’re not in Wellington, get in touch ASAP so we can make something happen. We’re always keen to get beer dogs (and other animals) into the calendar, so don’t feel like you have to leave Admiral Fluffybutt at home.

We believe in paying creatives for their work, and while our photographers and designer have offered their time at a discount, we want to ensure that they receive compensation to show our gratitude. The organising team and models have all volunteered their time. We need $4,000 to cover the time and resources required to shoot, design, print, and distribute the calendar - everything else we collect will go straight to SAPN.

In the last two years we’ve raised $30,000 - let’s blow that out of the water this year.

——

*We have a zero tolerance policy for body shaming. Violators will be subject to a pub rant from Jess and/or Megan, and will be denied beer during aforementioned rant.

It's party time!

03/01/2017 at 3:22 PM

The calendars are in the mail and it's time to party! Join us at Husk Bar on 5 January from 5 pm for beer and butts and hugs (speeches and official stuff around 7 pm). We'll have charity kegs for the Sexual Assault Prevention Network thanks to Choice Bros, Invercargill Brewery, and Wild and Woolly, and whatever other delicious libations Husk has on tap.

Did your brewery miss out on sponsoring? We're still after kegs to help us raise money for SAPN, so it's not too late - email us [email protected] if you're keen to donate a keg.

If you pledged for launch party tickets, your first two drinks are on us - come see Megan or Jess for your drink tokens. Everyone else is welcome to drop in to the party and bring a friend or five - no tickets or RSVP required.

Corporate sponsors, please send us your names for the door by midday on Thursday 5 January.

We'll have some spare calendars and magnets for sale at the party - first come, first served.

See you all on Thursday!

beery hugs,

Jess & Megan

Butts for errrrybody!

22/12/2016 at 4:21 PM

We did it! After a frantic scramble (including a last minute NSFW shoot by the wonderful NZ Homebrew Conference team!) to pull the whole thing together, we have a calendar!

Thank you to Meg Howie, our designer, for never once telling us to sod off, and to The Big Picture for tolerating our complete disregard for deadlines. If you need anything printed, call them. Preferably with a bit of advance notice. Thanks to BrandersNZ for our magnets, also on short notice (are you sensing a theme here?). And of course, thanks to Jed for...everything. This wouldn't have happened without you lovely people.

If you (or someone you trust) will be in Wellington tomorrow, you can pick up your calendar and/or magnets at Golding's Free Dive from about 4 PM until 7ish. Look for Jess and her box of calendars. Bring a friend, stay for a beer and support our beloved headquarters. If you'd like additional calendars or magnets, she'll also have a few available - bring cash or your banking app.

Not in Wellington? Email us [email protected] to confirm your delivery address. If we don't hear from you by Saturday morning, we'll be posting it to the address you provided when you pledged.

Thanks again for your support and patience this year! We'll see you at the launch party on 5 January at Husk. Tell all your friends.

We're still looking for some charity kegs to put on for SAPN (thanks to Choice Bros and Invercargill Brewing already!) - get in touch if you're keen to donate.

beery hugs,

Jess & Megan

The final countdown.

19/12/2016 at 1:41 PM

Thanks to everyone for your patience and pledges. We <3 you very much.

We're finalising the calendar as we type and going to print this week. This means we'll have calendars in the mail before Xmas, but you won't get them until the following week. We're very sorry and will throw in extra presents as a consolation prize. You can give your intended recipient these adorable behind-the-scenes butts as a stand-in gift in the meantime:

We'll hold court in the Wellington CBD as soon as we have the calendars in hand for anyone who wants to pick theirs up before XMas - standby for details.

As ever, we love you. If you missed out on pledging or sponsoring, email us [email protected] and we'll sort you out.

Beery hugs,

Jess & Megan

All I want for Christmas is you.

12/12/2016 at 8:51 PM

Festive greetings to all of you.

Many of you have been asking about the calendar and the party. Unfortunately, life and time continue to march relentlessly forward, and both Megan and Jess have jobs from which it is much more difficult to slip away for two hours to take photos of butts in the middle of the day this year. (rude, we know!) But we're pressing ever onward, slowly but steadily.

We've finished a number of shoots, including naked sirens at Breaker Bay and wizards at One Fat Bird. We've got a pool party, lumberjack pinups, and maybe even some strategically-tangled fairy lights still in the works.

We're thrilled to welcome our new friends at Invercargill Brewery to the calendar family. They organised a shoot and donated a keg to the party in less than a week. They also included a pug AND a guinea pig in their photo, thus helping us reach Jess's goal of more animals every year. We love you, South Island.

Another round of love to Sean and the Golding's crew for sponsoring, giving us a home away from home, and an homage to a classic Tarantino film that put the original to shame. And much love to Craft Beer College, who sponsored as soon as we pushed the campaign live. Y'all do our community proud.

What does this mean for you, beloved pledger? We're still going to get the calendar printed and in the mail before Christmas, but the launch party has been postponed to 2017. If you pledged for party tickets, your first two drinks will be on us. If you didn't, come down to HUSK and enjoy some delicious charity kegs (much love to Kerry for letting us use his beautiful new bar!).

5 January, 5:30 PM @ HUSK (Ghuznee Street)

Still keen to model? Email us now

If your favourite bar or brewery or other company hasn't sponsored yet, tell them to get in quick before we close the campaign this week. We're still a ways behind previous years, so get sharing and tell all your friends to pledge. Don't forget we have sweet magnets this year for those after something more timeless than a calendar!

We love you all.

Shake it off

16/11/2016 at 4:12 PM

Hello beautiful friends.

We hope that you are recovering from the recent political and tectonic unpleasantness with minimal lasting damage. We apologise for the radio silence from us (see aforementioned unpleasantness).

Megan is currently spending all of her waking time keeping the country informed about the earthquakes (and we love her for it!), while Jess is picking up fallen shelves and learning exactly how many shattered beer glasses it takes to cover a kitchen floor and discovering all the places that tiny bits of glass can hide.

But we still love butts and we'll be back into the throes of calendar-ing once our lives are more stable (literally).

In the meantime, we've added some new rewards for people who love the cause but just aren't into calendars. Now you can stick your wedding save the dates and A+ papers to your fridge with a beautiful butt and/or beer person! (Because their picture is on a fridge magnet, not because they're going to come to your house and lean their butt against your fridge all day. Don't be silly).

We'd love your help promoting the calendar and nudging your favourite bars and breweries (and other businesses that just love butts and beer and good causes!) to sponsor us. We're especially keen to find a printer willing to cut us a deal, so if you know one, you'll have our undying gratitude.

If you want to model, hit us up! Easiest way is to slide into our DMs on Twitter (@NZbeercalendar, @thejduce, or @meganjwhelan), or flick us an email at [email protected]

You are beautiful and lovely, and we love you very much.
