At Brown Bread, we believe in impossible ideas. We also believe in good art.
As part of our love for bringing the community around 'good stuff' projects, we've taken it upon ourselves to regularly deliver a public work of art by an established NZ artist to mark what is going on in this city of endless possibility.
In 2014, the very first Brown Bread Art Project was installed. We teamed up with New Zealand artist Regan Gentry to plant Woods from the Trees, a large-scale work of art which used waste demolition wood from earthquake-damaged residential properties in Christchurch. Brown Bread Art Project #1 was a success and can still be marvelled at outside C1 Espresso on High Street today. We learned that, no matter how impossible something seems, if an idea is strong, the community love will come and the means to make it happen will follow.
Now, two years later, we're doing it again. Christchurch is in a unique period of transition, embracing the dynamic never-ending flux whilst acknowledging the need to return to a sense of stability. The Affirmation Collection by Christchurch artist, and one of our favourite humans ever, Wayne Youle, is a lightbox series and seeks to monumentalise the process of change happening in the city right now. The lightboxes will be located within Christchurch's new South Frame as described in the Christchurch Central Recovery Plan.
The individual works include:
- Drum Roll Please
- The Gift That Keeps on Giving
- Wish You Were Here
- Piece of Mind
- A New New Beginning
So how the heck are we going to actually make this happen?
This is where you come in. After all, it's art that belongs to everyone.
Our hope is that The Affirmation Collection will help the community find its voice and place within the Christchurch rebuild.
We're lucky enough to have already captured the interest and generous contribution from local organisations, Strata Group and Connetics... But there's still a long way to go. It takes a lot of people and a lot of passion to make impossible ideas happen - but we're game if you are.

BEHIND THE SCENES PART I
26/10/2016 at 1:28 PM
Go behind the scenes of Wayne Youle talking about The Affirmation Collection and where the idea for each work came from...
Behind the scenes part II will introduce A New New Beginning - one of the five lightboxes in The Affirmation Collection.
THIS JUST IN: OUR FIRST MASSIVE PLEDGE!
25/10/2016 at 10:27 AM
The party poppers went off in the Brown Bread office this morning as we received our first $5000 pledge from an anonymous pledger.
We know who this good soul is, but respect their decision to keep this generous donation hush, hush.
The donation was listed under 'no reward' which means there are still three $5000 available pledges to get yourself a Wayne Youle original artwork.
There's still a long way to go and we need your help to reach target and bring The Affirmation Collection to Christchurch. Make your pledge worth it and spread the word to your friends - tell them about this big opportunity to rebuild a city with great art.
Let's do this!
