Up The Punks 2012

Project 2012-09-17 05:24:11 +1200

Up The Punks 2012 is an exciting exhibition opening in November 2012 that will explore 35 years of Wellington's underground punk scene.

Ten years on from the original show the Up The Punks team of photographer John Lake, visual artist Kerry Ann Lee and friends are returning to Wellington's home of punk, Thistle Hall, with an all new updated visual extravaganza that will blow your mind with fantastic facts about Wellington you didn't know you didn't know or had long since buried in a cider induced memory hole.

Since 2002 we've accumulated a whole lot more material thanks to the wonders of the interwebs and from 2011 this has been progressively added to an expanding on-line archive that you can check out at www.upthepunks.co.nz.

In November 2012 we want to revisit this 35 years of local history with an all new dynamic exhibition in which you the viewer can add your stories to the mix. We'll be installing panels around the gallery, chucking up a few hundred of the choicest images and inviting everyone to write their stories directly onto the walls. Think of it as a walk-in discussion thread that will feed more information into the archive!

During the exhibition we'll be producing a zine, screening a megaupload of video footage, putting together a walking tour map of punk sites for your snazzy smart-phone, and holding a couple of gigs showcasing some really awesome bands that have all been a part of Wellington's vibrant scene over 35 years.

We're looking to crowd fund a portion of Up The Punks' costs so we're trying to raise $2500.00 Check out our Pledge Me page for details on how you can play your part in this collaborative community exhibition and pick up some choice rewards along the way. UP THE PUNKS 2012 Pledge Me Vid 2

30/09/2012 at 7:52 AM

Has someone close to you been behaving strange of late? You might have noticed horrible sounds coming from their room? Or an outbreak of patches appearing on their nice new clothes. Has their hair taken on a new and interesting shape and/or color? Your son, daughter, work colleague or nana may be afflicted by punk rock cult music!

Symptoms may include bad language, strange and frightening dance moves, outlandish and provocative behavior, questioning authority, over consumption of cheap liquor, falling out of trees, and the worship of all mighty Satan!

You can help save your loved one from this terrible condition by pledging all of your money to UP THE PUNKS 2012. Our team of dedicated researchers are working on a cure for this affliction. Go to our Pledge Me page at this address to help us find a cure!

Flesh D-Vice added to the closing night line up

26/09/2012 at 8:47 AM

UP THE PUNKS 2012 is proud to announce that Wellington's longest surviving hard-edge rock and roll band, Flesh D-Vice, have been confirmed to play the exhibition closing gig on November 10!

Formed in 1982 Flesh D-Vice were a central band in the 1980s Wellington scene with charismatic lead singer Gerald Dwyer throwing himself hardout into everything from organising punk festivals (Golden Showers 1983), record releases (Capitol Kaos, The Harder The Edge The Rocker the Roll), radio (The Hard Edge Rock and Roll show) and managing Head Like A Hole and Shihad.

With Gerald's passing in the early 90s Flesh D-Vice have continued to play with Steve Andrews of Vas Deferens on vocals. This November the bands original members Eugene, Dwyane and Brent Jenkins bring a stripped down three piece version of Flesh D-Vice to Thistle Hall for one night of hard edge rock and roll punk.
