Through the Eyes of Depression
Short Description:
Through the Eyes of Depression is a book aimed at helping people to understand depression. People who have or have had depression have contributed from all over New Zealand with their stories and experiences. Mental illness can be difficult to understand from the outside and many friends and family struggle with this, this book aims to help friends and family members to understand their loved one’s mental illness.
What is the book about?
Through the Eyes of Depression aims to help people understand depression and what it is like to live with. Many books on depression only give information on what depression is and address how to manage it, but very few show what depression is really like from the viewpoint of those who live with it. When something is more understood it is far easier for people to know how to help and when it comes to depression the support of others is what truly makes the difference.
This book is written entirely from the view point of those who live with depression. Every word is written by those who personally know what it is like and what has best help them. We felt this was important as instead of reading unemotional clinical research these are words from real people who have been through real experiences and can understand what you or your loved one is going through.
Who is involved?
Creator:
My name is Hayley and I came up with the idea for this book. I personally have depression and volunteer with people who have depression. Over the years I have seen many friends and families of those who have depression struggling to understand what their loved one Is going through. It is hard to understand and invisible illness and this can lead to a lot of frustration on both sides. That is why I created this book, to bring some understanding between those who have depression and their loved ones.
Contributors:
People who have or have had depression have contributed from all around New Zealand to share their stories and experiences. Some have written two lines and others have written two pages. It is a very brave thing to share your experience and we are very grateful to each and every person who has contributed to this book. This book has not been written by one person but a whole multitude of people from all walks of life to share their advice and experience with depression.
Printers:
Through the Eyes of Depression is being printed by Brebner Print. They are amazing and have a very high quality of work. They have been very supportive and helpful with their ideas for printing, design and the layout of the book.
Helpful supporters:
A whole group of family, friends and medical staff have helped to support this project. From organisation, to helpful contacts, to donations, encouragement, advice and much more. We are so grateful to everyone who has helped support this project!
Pledge me Backers:
You! Thank you to everyone who wants to get involved and help make this book a possibility.
What will the money go towards?
The book is now complete and ready for publishing. We are hoping to raise $2000 which will go towards the first round of printing. These will then be distributed to mental health community services, schools, libraries and book stores around New Zealand. All funds raised go directly towards publishing and making this book available. We are very grateful for any funds towards this project which can make a real difference.
Book progress:
Over the last year I have sent out inquiries to hospitals, mental health groups and community services seeing if people would be interested in contributing. Over the last six months both me and several amazing helpers have been writing and organizing the book which is now ready for publishing.

Hello Everyone
Through the Eyes of Depression is printed! The books arrived yesterday and they are being sent out today. I just want to thank everyone for their amazing support! I especially would like to thank everyone who contributed, Brebner print for their brilliant job and of course my Mother, who supported this book from beginning to end. I have loved working on this project and it has been an honor to receive people's stories and opinions. Hopefully this book can help those out there who struggle to understand or struggle to feel understood while dealing with depression.
The books should arrive in the mail next week, but please notify me if for some reason yours does not arrive.

Hello Everyone
Thank you for all your support! It's amazing that we can now get this book printed in a few weeks.
I just wanted to give a general update about how the book is going and when it will be printed. We are currently sorting out a few finishing touches with Brebner (our printers), this requires lots of meetings about the format and design of the book. Hopefully this stage will be finished at the latest by the end of next week. Once the formatting is finished the book will be sent straight to the printers!
Its takes around ten days to print all the books and as soon as they are all done they will be sent out to everyone. So in 2-3 weeks you should have a book arrive in your mail!
Thank you again for your intersest and support!
Kind Regards
Hayley
