Hello

My name is Dwayne Cameron and I am an artist / actor / director / writer / producer. I have 15 years experience acting in films and television in New Zealand, Australia and America in over 250 episodes of TV and a dozen feature films and short films. I've acted in a lot of New Zealand TV series, including: The Cult, Shortland Street, Street Legal, Mercy Peak, Legend of the Seeker, The Tribe and movies like The Locals and recently A Dream, which made with the help of New Zealand Oscar winner Jane Campion. In America I've starred on screen alongside: William Shatner, John Savage (from The Godfather III), Selma Blair and Amber Heard (from The Rum Diaries). As a screenwriter I've written two feature films and over a dozen short films. This is the third short film I have written that I have gone onto direct, produced and star in. As a practicing artist for over half my life I have painted 500+ paintings which are all viewable on my website. I have used my creative vision to infuse and enrich my film Holding The Sun with a unique and compelling story line and style of abstract metaphorical visual delivery.

In between acting in film and theatre, writing my scripts and also painting in my studio over the last year, I wrote, directed, produced, and starred in Holding The Sun, which is my first official short film that I want to take to international festivals. I've directed other short films but not on this scale.

What is Holding The Sun? - An art house independent short film.

Holding The Sun is the story of businessman Matthew Archview, who is lost in an ocean of amnesia after a devastating car crash that took the life of his son and erased all memories of his boys existence. The only clue he has to unravel his past and any hidden memories is a drawing that his son did of their last day together at the beach. Coupled with chance meetings with old and new friends, guides, omens, and visions, Matthew journeys deep into Self and enters the cave he fears most in order to find the treasure he so dearly seeks.

At the core of the story is a quest, a deep journey into Self. A journey that unravels the nature of suppressed memories due to trauma and how by facing the shadows we fear most, one can be freed of them. Through image metaphor we explore how they can be integrated into ones psyche and how lost loved ones are never as far away as we think. That greatest journey we can ever take is only three hand widths long - from the head to the heart.

What are you pledging for? - Post production for Holding The Sun.

Instead of lining up for funding from the usual funding bodies I wanted to create something that was truly unique and different, something that broke the usual formulas and didn't have to run through any content or structure filters. My own true original vision. I knew if i applied for funding that during the creative process I could possibly end up crafting the story with the intentions of getting funding and not because of the truth of the story. And I had an important personal story to tell that I wanted to be %100 loyal to, and knew I had to take a huge risk to deliver it in my own time on my own dime and in my own style without any interference. It meant I had do everything myself from scratch. So over the last year I paid for the entire 21 days of shooting, on and off, experimenting and playing with ideas with a very talented, professional cast and crew. It was meant to be a short and simple shoot, but as the ideas grew so did the vision. I have been working on professional film sets for over half my life as an actor, so I called a few close friends who had all the top gear and studios etc and we began shooting. I also called up friends who are accomplished actors in New Zealand in shows like Go Girls, The Billy T James movie and The Worlds Fastest Indian, and got them along to play too.

Including all favours into the costs the end result was that I shot a $25,000 short film for $2,500.

What makes Holding The Sun different to other short films? - The style and vision of this film is very unique and concentrated.

My approach has been very different. I built the film up from scratch as a screenwriter/ story teller while studying psychology, then, as an artist I designed the film visuals in my art studio, scene by scene, shot by shot, working out colour palettes, composition, lighting etc. Then as the producer/director i sourced all the actors, locations, costumes, built all the sets and props etc. Then during shooting i played the main character Mathew Archview. And finally again, as the artist, I edited the film. The end result was a massive 55 minute short film, which is getting closer to a feature length film. So I spent another two months refining and condensing the ideas down to a more festival friendly 16 minutes. I'm looking to make it even a little shorter for curtain festivals that require the film to be under 15 minutes.

What will the pledge pay for? - Professional colour grade, sound mix, music score.

I need to put the icing on the cake. I finished the final cut for the film a few months ago and was so happy with the results I knew straight away that it needed a really smooth professional touch from post technicians. It needs a professional colour grade and sound mix, and also beautiful music to serve the visuals. AFTA award winning New Zealand music composer Rhian Sheehan will be assisting me with the music for the film. http://www.rhiansheehan.com/about/
