About the MP bikes

Hi there. We are a group of year 11 girls from Diocesan School for Girls, whose goal is to support kiwi kids in the care of fostering families by raising money to build three bikes. We will build these bikes ourselves which we will then present to 3 children identified by Fostering Kids NZ. Our aim is to raise $550 to buy three bikes, which we will be giving to these foster families.

  • We'll be donating 3 bikes to 2 little boys, aged 7 & 11 and one girl aged 9. Their favourite colours are red and their favourite heroes are ironman and super girl. If we reach our goal of $550, we will be able to donate these bikes to these kids and incorporate their favourite heroes and colours into their bike.

About Fostering kids NZ

Fostering Kids is an organisation which finds homes for children who are unable to live with their biological parents. This means the children have a chance for a better life with a foster family who look after the children as if they are their own. We want to make the children’s time with their foster parents an even more enjoyable one by providing them with their very own bike. With a bike they will be able to explore and enjoy the freedom and fun of childhood that comes with biking around with friends.

At least 10,000 kiwi kids are currently in the care of foster parents. The kids may call these people their parents from just a few days to a few years. These kids need the love and support of their families and the wider community to help them live fulfilling and successful lives. Fostering Kids NZ provides support and education to the kids but to do this they need donations. We have decided to try and raise enough money to build three bikes for three different families to give them our support in a functional yet fun item.

How are we trying to help?

The bikes that we give will provide new opportunities and skills for foster children, benefitting them in various aspects of their lives.

  • Bikes encourage exercise and being active

  • Owning a bike gives children a sense of responsibility as it is something to take care of by themselves

  • Bikes provide free fun and recreation

  • Bikes give children a sense of freedom and independence

  • Bikes offer a range of new skills to be learned, such as learning to ride, hand eye coordination etc.

  • Bikes in a family encourage more family bonding for closer relationships and overall enjoyment, benefiting not only the foster children but also their families.

  • Bikes are an environmentally friendly form of transport, as well as being free and reducing congestion on the roads.

We are using Pledgeme to raise money for the bikes to support foster children, by online donations. That’s where you come in! The donation you make, no matter how small will contribute to this bike, and may provide you with a reward. If 55 people each donate $10 we have already reached our goal, and considering that 55 people would be less than just the parents of our class this certainly seems achievable! Even a donation of $5 would provide a simple bell for a bike which would ensure the safety of the child on roads, and crossing driving ways. It is your donation that matters most to us, and we highly appreciate the time you take and the money you donate to this great cause.

Pledge me is an all or nothing site, so even an extra few bucks could make all the difference. We need your donations to make this possible as if we do not reach our target three fostered kiwi kids will not have the opportunity to benefit from what most people take for granted.
