The Lord Lackbeards North Island Tour
Project 2016-03-30 14:11:45 +1300
The Lord Lackbeards Touring Company are taking on our most ambitious project yet! We are doing a tour of schools and the communities of the North Island with 2 shows: Hamlet and Ophelia thinks harder by Kiwi playwright Jean Betts.
The Lord Lackbeards Touring Company is a Wellington based theatre company run by Ania Upstill and Julia Campbell. We aim to bring exciting and engaging performances of Shakespeare’s plays to a wide audience. We use Shakespearean theatrical conventions – such as universal lighting and a thrust stage – to create a realistic and energetic portrayal of Shakespeare’s work. We always tour to schools, since we strongly believe that Shakespeare should be seen to be understood and fully enjoyed.
Through touring, we get to expose more communities to high quality theatre! This is our third tour of the North island. This year we are going to Palmerston North, Hamilton, Gisborne, Hawkes Bay, Wairarapa and then back to perform in Wellington. We need some support hiring a van and with some food and accomodation costs.
“Speak the speech, I pray you, as I pronounced it to you, trippingly on the tongue”
In a reversal of productions that use the historically accurate convention of only male actors, We are presenting a Hamlet with an all female cast. Continuing the conversation between past and present, this production combines an Elizabethan approach to staging and text with modern physical theatre techniques and costuming.
Based on Hamlet, but with all the good lines reassigned, Ophelia Thinks Harder looks at the famous play from Ophelia’s point of view. Betts questions what it means to be a woman at Elsinore - or anywhere else. Pushed and pulled by all the men (and women) in her life, Ophelia has to figure out her own path.

Thanks to everyone who has Pledged so far! Just a quick update on how things are going on with the preparations for our tour.
We had a wonderful time presenting Hamlet at Pop UP Globe in Auckland. We did 2 performances, both of which were sold out, and people were turned away at the gate!
Here are a few pictures:
Next on the cards is putting the finishing touches on Ophelia thinks harder, only a couple of weeks until we head off on tour!
