Action Station TPPA March-11.jpg

Who is ActionStation?

We are a community organisation that combines digital tools and people power to push for progressive political change. We’ve run 45 campaigns since we first launched 20 months ago and 220,000 New Zealanders have taken action with us.

What is OurActionStation?

OurActionStation is a digital platform that will allow ActionStation members and their friends to start their own campaigns on the issues they feel are important. It will put all of the ActionStation digital tools at your fingertips. With expert support from our team all along the way, you can start a petition, email your supporters, organise events, join like-minded groups and win your campaign!

Why OurActionStation?

With the meteoric rise of crowdfunding in New Zealand, and the distribution of centralised power that comes with it, we want to put campaigning back in the hands of communities in the exact same way.

We are approached several times a week, every week, by members of the ActionStation community, or by local organisations and groups, asking us to start campaigns on issues of concern to them or their communities. There is a need from local communities and campaigners to work smarter, not harder with the assistance of digital tools and expert support.

The problem is the ActionStation team is small, and we just can’t do everything. We have the equivalent of 2.5 full-time employees which means capacity is limited.

The solution we’ve identified is to open-source campaigning. We want to give our community the tools needed to win campaigns, and we’ll provide support. It’s the next big step in the direction of the full expression of our vision at ActionStation: a massive movement of progressive New Zealanders with the skills, tools, community and desire to use people-powered action to hold power to account and lead the way to a better, fairer, more flourishing future for Aotearoa New Zealand.

Our Ask

If people-powered change is something you’d like to see more of in Aotearoa, then please chip in what you can today. Any gift, big or small, helps us toward our goal. The platform is already in development and if we can hit our target by the end of April, then we’ll launch OurActionStation in May knowing that we have the support of our crowd to launch this important and timely initiative.

Our Rewards

We tried to make sure the rewards that are up for grabs in this campaign align with the values and vision of ActionStation. Our goal is always to inform, connect and empower our community.

BWB Books

Thanks to our friends at Bridget Williams Books, you can get your hands on one of these important reads:

We only have 20 of each, so get in quick!

Kiwi Diary 2016

Kiwi Diary showcases our people, landscape, heritage and stories, supports homegrown ideas and debate, and encourages good living, while becoming your treasured, personalised keepsake of every year. We have 30 up for grabs! Check out the diaries here.

ActionStation T-Shirt

These t-shirts are unisex and available in all sizes. They are certified slavery-free and organic t-shirts, and are  great for protests, rallies and demonstrations or just starting conversations.

Crowdsourced Rewards

We put a call out to our community and asked what they might be willing to contribute in the way of skills and time, as a reward to this campaign.

Sunil Williams - Web Design & Development

Sunil is a web developer who has offered to run a half day workshop on “How To Build A Website For Your Campaign” OR 5 hours of development time toward your organisation. An offer normally valued at $500, get in quick!

Claire Mahon Changemaker Coaching

Claire is a human rights advocate and international lawyer who has been living and working in Geneva, Switzerland, for over a decade. Through her work as a Coach & Mentor / Consultant & Advisor / Teacher & Trainer, she works to empower leaders, change-makers, and advocates. Claire has offered 4 x 1hr sessions of one-on-one coaching as a reward to this campaign. Valued at $150 a session. This is a bargain!

ActionStation Workshops

And finally, as part of the reward system, the ActionStation team will come to your organisation and run a half or full-day workshop on increasing your team's campaigning skills, using digital tools to maximise your impact and improving your social media game. (Please note these trainings are limited to organisations that are values-aligned).

COMMON QUESTIONS

How will my donation be spent?

Screen Shot 2016-03-24 at 2.54.02 pm.png

COST BREAKDOWN

Initial setup and launch of the platform: $2,500

Six months of staff time to support members to use the platform @ $1200/mth: $7,200

Six months cost of maintaining the platform (including subscription fees to the providers of the software) @ $600/mth: $3,600

Costs of campaign (video + advertising): $1,000

PledgeMe fee and credit card processing: $1,500

Buffer (unforeseen costs): $1,000

= $20,000

Is this really necessary? We already have petition platforms that people can use.

We believe OurActionStation is distinguished from other distributed platforms because:

  • it is focused specifically on New Zealand

  • is explicitly about social justice, equality values, purpose driven

  • is multi issue and aims to contribute to movement building in New Zealand

  • is more than a petition platform, it’s a campaign platform where you can start groups, events and email your supporters

  • is connected to a massive (and growing) community of New Zealanders with progressive values

  • is supported by Kiwi-based campaigners and staff who have experience in a New Zealand context

Will anyone be able to campaign on anything?

We expect we'll probably see campaigns we don't agree with, campaigns that might seem a bit random and or just plain kooky. That's fine with us, as long as it's not defamatory, discriminatory, illegal - you get the idea. It comes down to this: does your campaign promote or incite violence? Does it promote bullying, or advocate discrimination based on someone's gender, sex, religion, ethnicity, nationality or sexual orientation? Is it defamatory? No? Excellent. We're all good.

We do reserve the right to use our judgment and take something down if it crosses a line of common decency. We also have a rotating 'Member Review Panel' of ActionStation members who have been with us for more than six months that help us to make decisions on whether or not a campaign fits with our community values. We believe whole-heartedly in democractic, transparent decision-making and will be using Loomio for this process.

Is my donation tax-deductible?

Unfortunately, no. Due to the nature of New Zealand's charitable status laws, we are not a registered charity. We are, however, not-for-profit. The benefit of ActionStation not being a charity is that we can speak out on important issues that others can't because we are independent. The downside is, you won't get a tax deduction when donating. But you will get our gratititude and a warm, fuzzy feeling from contributing to a better, more equal and democratic New Zealand.

I can’t afford to chip in, but I can offer a reward

Awesome, please email [email protected] using the subject line: PLEDGEME REWARD and outline what you can contribute and how much you think it’s worth. The more detailed you can be, the better!
