Win Children's Book Award
Project 2012-09-10 05:52:20 +1200
The Joy Cowley Children's Book Awards require new and unpublished stories for this year’s Book Awards. With that in mind I wrote two gorgeous children's stories, with the hope of submitting them for the competition.
Imagine your childhood experiences of exploring a beach with the sand, grass and coastal dunes shimmering in the noon-day heat.
Imagine too what you felt like walking through native bush with its earthy tones, damp smells. These are the ideas I have in my two stories - bringing alive the places I loved as a child and retelling these stories from a child's perspective.
The submission deadline is October 31 2012, and I need help getting $200 for the submission fee and postage, printing, and of course Pledge Me's commission.
'If it’s so cheap why don't you just pay for it yourself?' you may ask - well living with a Auckland University student husband and two pre-schoolers on a student income has its drawbacks. Did I mention that I live in Hamilton with our two kids while he studies in Auckland?
So yeah, any pledge would be much appreciated!

I had the wonderful Amy from the States beta-read my two stories and she gave great feed back and suggested word changes. I have read, re-read, and read out-loud, and re-written each story again and again. They have been going around my head - sometimes at 4.30 in the morning. Its been so wonderful to put my childhood memories down on paper in a form that my kids will always enjoy!
I know that I actually have a chance at one of the most prestigious Children's Books Awards in New Zealand. My writing is fabulous, and time and again I amaze myself at the imagery that is conjured up when I read each line. I am looking forward to publishing these two stories, and others in this same genre, whether through traditional publishing, or self-publishing online.
Any donation would be much appreciated.
An exerpt from 'Neptune's Necklace' by Joy Findlay
Sea snails, sea shells
Sitting on a sandy shore
Sea urchin, sea biscuits
Lying on the ocean floor
Green leaves, bright red
Christmas flowers out of reach
Tall trees, cool shade
All lined up along the beach
Jandles on, sunhat too
Drop the towel near Mum and Dad
Beach time, venture out
Exploration to be had
One paua, two cockles
Pretty sea shells that I glean
Three oysters, four pipi
Pick them up and brush them clean
