About

Lola Needs Her Head!

Project 2016-03-16 12:34:55 +1300

Lola Lapin is currently confined to four edges of an A3 sheet of paper pinned to a project board. With your help, she will be a fully constructed character ready to shake her bustle under the show lights at Te Whaea, Wellington in September.

Lola Lapin Major Work Concept

I’m Khrissie Rhodes and I am in my last year of the Costume Construction Diploma at Toi Whakaari, New Zealand Drama School, Wellington.

As a final year costuming student, the biggest task I undertake is the Major Work project. This entails fully realising a costume from concept to construction. It will push and challenge all of my creative and technical abilities over seven months. The final creation will be exhibited in the annual Costume Showcase on the 23rd & 24th of September.

I’ve chosen to work with the Lola Lapin concept, which is a combination of a revamped fashion plate from 'Godey’s Ladies Book' (July 1876) and a rather large bunny mascot head. I have chosen this so I can explore the Victorian silhouette which demands many sewing techniques and pattern drafting skills to create the foundations and outter layers . This concept enables a taste of Victorian fashion to be seen in a contempary context. I will bring Lola life like a living illustration to tantalise the audience with the scale and vivid colours.

Why a bunny head you ask? I have no idea. I do however know how I am going to make it.

Executing the proportions accurately to the image is vital in completing this costume project. To achieve the scale of Lola’s HUGE head I have been offered an amazing internship! I will be personally mentored alongside Michelle Barton the Creative Director of the leading European mascot making company Costumes with Character Ltd, Manchester. The internship will take place late June through to mid July. As well as making Lola’s head and feet I will be interning in various departments of this company and discovering the wonderful world of professional & international mascot making.

Once I have completed my internship I will be flying myself, Lola’s head and feet back to NZ to complete the rest of the garment and assemble Lola in her final glory.

I will return to NZ with with a large rabbit head and feet, and a suitcase full of experience and international networks to call upon when I graduate in November.

NO REAL ANIMALS WILL BE HARMED IN THE MAKING!

WHAT I NEED TO SUCCEED:

My flights and accomodation are all sorted. If you Pledgeme you will be helping me to complete the remaining and essential parts of my project I need funding for, which are:

  • Materials needed to cover the head and bring Lola to life.
  • Materials needed to make the feet so Lola can strut her stuff.
  • Lengths of wig hair to create Lola's killer hair do.
  • Other expenses needed for a 3-4 week stay in the UK.

Reward update

 Greetings pledgers.

As most of you will know, the pledge rewards are almost complete. I had a technical problem with the music video/postcard when uploading it from England and it was removed from the web. SO, hang in there, I am getting the problem fixed so I can share it again with the 'With Love From Manchester' pledgers.

The carrots made it through customs and will be sent out this week along with video shout outs to the wonderful 'Handmade Gift' pledgers.

For more updates, keep posted.

Cheers,

Khrissie Rhodes
