LATEST NEWS - 12.40pm. Tues 17th September 2012:
Our goal of $1200 has been reached!! Yay!....but we are still accepting donations as the extra funds are needed to support 2 volunteer teachers working in the Auckland and Christchurch prisons.
Also more money is needed for creating donation kits, printing the next batch of booklets, organising fundraising events, producing a relaxation cd, producing the next manual, development of the program and supporting and mentoring the teachers (this can include assisting with the teachers training fees).
We cannot express our gratitude enough to all those who have responded and supported us during this time. I would like to say a big thanks to my Mum - Linda Spicer, Premratna and Swami Atmamuktananda for their editing assistance.
Huge appreciation to Premdhara who designed the manual cover and for being so patient with us on deciding on it. And also thanks to Leighton for contributing his design for the YEPT logo.
Heart felt gratitude to all the wonderful teachers who have donated Pledge Me rewards in the form of yoga classes and retreats! Lynda Miers, Kelly Fisher, Jo Vernon, Yogamani and the Anahata Yoga Retreat crew.
But honestly the biggest thanks has to go to the incarcerated men who unawares have inspired us to continue this work with their honesty, truthfulness, love, receptivity, and respect.
Our story:
We have compiled a manual to support the Yoga Education in Prisons Trust Yoga (YEPT) program in New Zealand prisons.
We want to print a run of 300 of the manuals to gift free to any prisoner in NZ who requests one.
The manual is safe, simple, easy to read and has original hand drawn illustrations.
It will be free to any prisoner who requests it.
The Yoga Education in Prisons Trust is a registered charitable trust providing yoga and meditation education for prisoners, in prisons in New Zealand. We recognize that the restrictive environment of a prison may be more conducive to internalisation and contemplation. Therefore it can be regarded as an opportunity to use the time-tested techniques and tools of yoga and meditation for personal growth and well-being.
A safe supportive environment is created by qualified and experienced Satyananda Yoga teachers that allows the prisoners to let go of fears and restrictive patterns, explore aspects of themselves that can enhance social integration.
The program
Rather than trying to reform the prisoners, our program focuses on offering skills for self observation and reflection. The power of the yoga practices develops the individual’s capacity for relaxation, understanding of a healthy and balanced lifestyle and knowledge of how to manage everyday life challenges. With these skills the prisoners have the tools to transform their own lives.
This program will help create safer community and reduce recidivism.
Any extra funds raised in this campaign will go towards supporting our dedicated Volunteer teachers and compiling the second and third Manuals.
