About

Union Thugs Unite!

Project 2016-02-03 12:40:20 +1300

Stand Up (the CTU's youth union movement) wants to spread the good word!

We think that lots of people either don't know what a union is, or think we're a bunch of thugs - and we want to start a conversation about it. The term "union thug" has been used throughout the history of the labour movement all around the world to paint a picture of unionists as unreasonable, violent and corrupt. The phrase has, in recent times, been used to describe President Barack Obama by Republicans in America due to his history as a grassroots organiser. POTUS isn't a thug!

We want to reclaim the phrase and show that we're actually just normal people who believe that working people should have a say in their working lives. We're not thugs, and our wee t-shirt design will show how ridiculous the description is... and (hopefully) get people to ask "what's this all about then?".

So basically, buy the t-shirt and wear it proudly. We're excited to finally be getting them out there to you!

Our super rad Union Thugs t-shirt

We need a minimum of 50 pledges before we can go ahead and get these made and sent out. The t-shirts are Fair Trade certified.

Stand Up is made up of, well...you! Probably. If you're a young worker, anyway. We represent the interests of young workers and apecifically are made up of thousands of young union members across the country. We believe that working people deserve to have a say in their workplaces and that unions are the best way to do this. We (some of us) *like* to call ourselves union thugs, because we think it makes us sound cooler.

In terms of beauracracy, we are made up of three convenors (Asher, Christina and Tony). Here, have a look at our beautiful faces.

We also have a bunch of beautiful committee members, but we didn't ask them about sharing their photos, so let's not go there right now...

Any money from pledges will be used to support Stand Up's work in the coming year which, at the moment, focuses on resourcing our presentations in high schools to educate students about their minimum work rights.

Cheers for the support!
