Comedy Web Series: The Video Store

Project 2015-12-18 11:49:01 +1300

Why should I care? I don't even pay my overdue fees.

Ever wondered what stories lie behind the counter at your local DVD shop?

'The Video Store' is an 8 part dark-comedy web series about the struggles of a surviving video store in the modern age of the Internet. Netflix is slowly lobotomising the relationship between customers and local video stores everywhere, and the culture within them is quickly disappearing.

MEGAFLICKS Manager, Stacey (Yvette Parsons), is quietly stressing about how she'll make next months rent, while still wondering how she'll pay for last month, but running in the red's not getting in the way of her optimism. She's got a few sharp, semi-borrowed marketing ideas that she's not going to let anyone get in the way of trying out.

Okay I'm still reading, who's in it?

The video store is a collaborative effort between Producer Kermath and Kieran Madden's brainchild, with one of New Zealand's most popular and Prolific Playwrights, Thomas Sainsbury with assistance of Greenstone TV, a hugely successful Production Powerhouse that's spear-headed of a wide variety of international shows since 1994.

Our cast and crew have a rich experience in film and theatre across the world, as well as being either a staff member or DVD store patron once in their lives, at some point.

GUEST STARRING

Keisha Castle-Hughes (Game of Thrones, Whale Rider), David Farrier (Newsworthy on TV3), Daniel Rutledge (TV3) Fleur Saville (Shortland Street, Being Eve), Natalie Medlock (Shortland Street), Robbie Magasiva (Lord of The Rings, Shortland Street), Perlina Lau (Flat 3), and more.

CAST

Writer and Director Thomas Sainsbury (SUPER CITY),  Yvette Parsons  Josh Lawrence (YouTubes' Scurb), Kermath (95bFM), Kieran Madden (95bFM), Rory Hunter, Lana Walters, Jane Etheridge, Imogen Peek-Swaney and more.

CREW includes Jonathan Guest (DOP), Ande Schurr & David Green (Sound), Monique Hoseason, Phoebe Driver, Genevieve Driver, and more.

Wait, Where will I be able to watch it?

Right now, plans are that you'll be able to watch it free from the comfort of your chosen house chair, straight from YouTube. There are also real plans to take the series to other platforms including Sky TV and other Web Series platforms.

Everyone who pledges will automatically be eligible for early access viewing that will be sent through email.

Okay but, where is all this money going anyway?

The target may look like a small house deposit in Pukenui to some, but it's a mere drop in the ocean compared to the true cost of filming something like this. We'll be thankful for every dollar we get contributed to this project, and we'll make sure you know about it. We're very fortunate to have so many people on this project who're doing it solely for being absolutely incredible, giving up their time in the name of success for the webseries, but we don't want them to starve. On condition of reaching our goal, our budget will allow us to hire quality gear, pay for the usage of an actual Video Store, and hopefully give a little to those who are giving up so much to make this project work.

We're also looking for corporate sponsorship, as we have tons of opportunity to get your brand on the counter, or somewhere where you think it'd best fit.

If you really want a budget presentation of all the spending, I'd be more than willing to share you the Google Drive link to the spider-web of spreadsheets that plague my mind every day. You gotta pledge first though.

When do you plan to shoot the series? May I come and have a geeze?

We're planning on shooting in mid-January, and if you fund us, no matter how much, you get a chance to come on set and see where your hard-earned money is getting put into. You might even meet the love of your life.

If you want to see a few samples of what's in store, why not have a gander at these scenes here:
