“We are born to a landscape of legend; formed through generations. Ancestors and descendant watch on as the unknown becomes known – mythology becomes history and legend becomes knowledge. These stories that envelope us, are under our very feet composing the fabric of our world; stories create who we are. Tell me a story. Tell me your story.”
We are a team of passionate young performers who have devised a theatre piece to show how youth are finding their place in Aotearoa/New Zealand today. In light of this we have created our own myth for the 21st century. The ages of our young performers range from 14-20 and it is these creative performers who have devised and written a piece of theatre we are proud to call ours.
The project is all about embracing our connection to the land of Aotearoa. During the devising process we have explored different aspects of performance that pertains to New Zealand. This includes work shops on the use of and meanings behing Taonga Puoro (traditional Maori instruments), exploring physical theatre, working together as a series of movements contributing to the overall performance as opposed to moving as individuals. We also feature spoken word, where we allowed our imaginative and opinionated youth to express there thoughts and feeling towards our home, through poetry, monologues, and inspirational dialougue.
We plan to take Turangawaewae 21 to the stage in Auckland and Hamilton and the budget of $2500 will help to fund these performances so we can inspire others and showcase how much Aotearoa/New Zealand means to us!
