Our campaign has now been funded and we've raised enough to buy eight acoustic recorders - thank you so much for all your support!
We've still got some awesome rewards available and any money now raised will go towards funding pest and predator control projects. Every additional $100 is enough to protect a kiwi for an entire year from the jaws and claws of vicious predators so please continue to pledge generously to help our precious kiwi.

How will these acoustic recorders help save kiwi?
It's an exciting time in kiwi conservation - we're on the cusp of being able to turn the decline of kiwi numbers into growth. To do this, we need identify new areas of kiwi habitat and bring them under managment but finding those new areas isn't always easy. If people think they have seen or heard kiwi in their area, this needs to be verified. One method of doing this is by listening for kiwi calls.
It's not always easy to capture the sights and sounds of kiwi calling
Where pest and predator control programmes are already in place, volunteers often undertake call count monitoring. This entails sitting out in the bush at night listening for kiwi calls and counting them to determine the number of kiwi in the area and whether they are males or females.
However, in the more out-of-the-way areas where the presence of kiwi hasn't been confirmed, it isn't practical for volunteers to do this. That's where an acoustic recorder comes in. These devices are designed to run for multiple days, or even weeks, capturing the sounds of the bush. The recordings can then be analysed for kiwi calls, or signs of other wildlife.
Vulnerable kiwi chicks only have a 5% chance of survival with no protection
If we detect kiwi, we can then look at what programmes we can put in place to protect them and improve their chances of survival. Without these acoustic recorders, we may not be able to confirm if there are kiwi in some areas, meaning that they'll be left to fend for themselves. In unmanaged areas, a kiwi chick only has a 5% chance of survival. Without our help, kiwi populations are likely to die out. Please join us by helping to find and protect more of our precious birds.
How much do we need?
The recorders cost $400 each so we’re trying to raise $4,000 to purchase eight and cover PledgeMe fees and other production costs. Your pledge could be a life-saver for kiwi.
If we raise more than our target, all additional funds will go towards pest and predator control, keeping kiwi safe when we find them. Every additional $100 is enough to protect a kiwi for an entire year.

Wow - we met our target with a week to go! Amazing. We're incredibly grateful to all of our fantastic pledgers - thank you so much!
We do still have a week left of our campaign so if you'd like to grab yourself an awesome reward, there are still plenty to go around. Any additional money that we raise will be used to fund pest and predator control projects, keeping kiwi safe from the jaws and claws of vicious predators.
