Beautiful Democracy

Art as Political Dissent

New Zealand has been part of a massive international protest in recent months.  Thousands of people stand united against the highly-secretive Trans-Pacific Partnership Agreement (TPPA) but the Government refuses to listen!  The controversial trade deal between 12 countries has been negotiated in secret and puts the profit of corporations ahead of individuals and communities.  The media has been shut out and requests for information have been refused.  Even the High Court has ruled that Trade Minister Tim Grosser acted unlawfully by refusing to give out information.

In times like this, art becomes a hugely important tool for the people to express their frustration and discontent.  This is an issue that will affect you and your grandchildren for decades to come.

Producer Sandy Wijetunge and Director Rose Archer

Beautiful Democracy is Candlelit Picture's first documentary, but we already have a strong track record in music videos, short films and web series.  This time, it's the females leading the charge - with Director Rose, Producer Sandy and an all-female production team.  Candlelit Pictures has received various accolades, including winner of the 2014 Show Me Shorts, two-time nominee for Vodafone Music Awards and finalist in the 48Hours Film Festival.

We have been at the front of protests, activist actions and arts festivals highlighting the TPPA.  From dance to a public graffiti mural and direct action activism.  Join us as we interview experts and follow our artists on their exciting and important journey.

The footage is looking great and we are all so excited to be at this point!  Filming will be finished by mid-December and then we need to start the edit, colour grade, sound mix and cover travel and production costs.  That's where you come in.  We need your help to complete the doco!

We have the support of many wonderful local businesses and individuals for our PledgeMe campaign and some amazing gifts to give to our supporters.  Check them out and please be part of supporting our documentary.

Everyone involved in this project, from the artists to the film-makers, believe in the message and documenting what our artists and activists are prepared to do in the fight for free rights.  It has been a passion project for the whole team and your financial support would mean so much to all of us!!

Here's a sneak peek at the artists featuring in Beautiful Democracy:

BEAUTIFUL DEMOCRACY - RELEASED !!

04/02/2017 at 11:04 AM

Dearest friends, family and followers ...

It is with GREAT pleasure and pride that we bring you BEAUTIFUL DEMOCRACY in all its glory! It has been quite a journey and a real labour of love, but we are absolutely thrilled to be telling this story and we couldn't have done it without your continued support.

As you know, Beautiful Democracy explores the dynamic artistic expression and activism that has surrounded the pro-democracy movement in New Zealand, specifically concerning the TPPA.

Even though the TPPA is now unlikely to pass in its current form, we in New Zealand must not lose sight of the fact that we may still be affected by this deal. Bill English insists that he has not given up entirely on the TPP, and that a resuscitation of the deal may still take place.

So, what next for BEAUTIFUL DEMOCRACY?

We made this important documentary to engage and educate. During these uncertain times, people power and public engagement in the democratic process are more important than ever, so moving forward we plan to take Beautiful Democracy further into the communities. We aim to encourage many different demographics to connect with and participate in local movements. We will be holding community screenings, and give full support to those who wish to hold their own screenings of our film.

Moving forward, we are also planning workshops in order to encourage communities to discuss what kind of world they dream to live in - and what steps can be taken towards making these dreams a reality?

Beautiful Democracy was born out of a desire to educate and inspire. The enforcement of these core principles will remain our key focus, therefore we are now looking at the film becoming an educational resource within High Schools.

How can you continue to engage with the film?

Now that BEAUTIFUL DEMOCRACY has been released we strive for it to reach far and wide - the more people that engage with it's message the better. For this, we need your help! Please share the film with friends and family and within your networks! The link is below:

https://vimeo.com/200864542

We will regularly update, as always on our facebook page (https://www.facebook.com/beautifuldemocracy/) and through PledgeMe, and we will keep you posted on further developments as time goes on.

If you would like to organise a community screening of Beautiful Democracy, you can contact the film-makers on the following emails:

[email protected] or [email protected]

"It's really about highlighting how you can use your own skills to participate. This is why we've made the film - we're film-makers so it's our way of participating in our democratic system, highlighting what's not working and making the Government accountable. It's so important that people realise that they really do have a voice, and they can use their skills to make that voice heard."

 - Sandy Wijetunge - Producer, Beautiful Democracy

All that's left to say at this point, is once again THANK YOU so much for your support.

Let's keep beautiful democracy alive.

Love, The entire BEAUTIFUL DEMOCRACY team.

WHERE DO WE GO FROM HERE?

03/03/2016 at 5:17 PM

Dear friends,

Can you believe it’s March already. It’s been a busy time at Beautiful Democracy HQ – let me fill you in!

So, the TPPA is signed, but the fight is far from over! The New Zealand government has two years to go ahead with the ratification process in parliament before the TPP can be implemented here in New Zealand law. At the moment the Green Party and It’s Our Future are sending submissions from the public urging the government and the Ministry of Foreign Affairs NOT to go ahead with the ratification. There are 11 more countries yet to also go through the same process, many of whom also do not want this insane deal to go ahead.

We must keep the pressure on and remember that there IS true power in numbers. The Beautiful Democracy team were there to witness the thousands who turned out at Sky City in Auckland on the 4th February to shout in one voice that Aotearoa is NOT FOR SALE!

We are now thrilled to be full swing into the post-production phase of Beautiful Democracy. Rose is busy with the edit along with Finn, our extremely talented editor. We have also started reaching out to some distribution platforms both locally and internationally to ensure a successful release for the film. Watch this space!

So, what now?

In order to keep the momentum of education, information and inspiration alive we have decided to take on a new challenge. The team have been invited to make a sister film to Beautiful Democracy through a documentary incentive called Loading Docs. So, let me tell you about our new endeavor entitled WATER FOR GOLD.

WATER FOR GOLD is a three-minute stop motion animation, with narration from leading legal academic Jane Kelsey that explores a key way in which corporate power is stripping away at some of our most fundamental rights. We ask the question:

"Is it right that corporations have the power to sue governments through the ISDS process?"

As you may already know, the inevitable implementation of ISDS (Investor-State Dispute Settlement) in New Zealand will come into reality if the TPP is ratified. It is an important part of trade law that needs to be recognised in the public eye.

You can read more about the project and meet the team here: https://waterforgolddocumentary.wordpress.com/about-the-film/

Why a new project?

Water For Gold focuses on the ISDS - a key thread of the TPPA. It is an issue that needs to be acknowledged. We are storytellers, so through the power of film we have a fantastic tool with which to challenge perspectives and inform.

Beautiful Democracy was born from a desire to celebrate the groups standing for democracy and educate those who may not ordinarily engage with political issues. Not everyone is an activist, and that’s fine! However, the truth remains that the powers that be are making decisions that will affect our future, so at the very least we should be given all the information! This is where true democracy lies, and we are being denied it.

We have interviewed Jane Kelsey (see pictures below), and our fantastic illustrator Frances Haszard (http://francies.work) has begun prepping for the mammoth and exciting task ahead!

How can you help?

We have launched another crowd-funding campaign, this time through ‘Boosted’ where the wonderful team at Loading Docs are matching dollar for dollar the funds we raise in order to make WATER FOR GOLD.  We have under a month, and are aiming for a target of $2,000.

We received an immense and overwhelming amount of support for Beautiful Democracy and we cannot thank you enough for your generosity. Now, it is vital that we keep the momentum going but we cannot do it alone.

There are a number of costs involved in making this animation, including specialist camera and visual storytelling equipment to make the characters come alive within a hired studio space. We would welcome any contribution you’d like to make to our cause, and we promise to keep you updated!

Please share our links within your networks. It will only take a second but will make a world of difference!

The all important link to our campaign:

It is important to remember that the fight is very much alive and that education is key.

Please help us to make WATER FOR GOLD.

Thank you so much for your support!

Love the team x

Dear Pledgers,

BEAUTIFUL DEMOCRACY is now in the post production phase of its journey...

...with HOURS of amazing footage to get through the next step is going to be a mammoth and exciting one!

MERRY CHRISTMAS and a VERY HAPPY NEW YEAR!

23/12/2015 at 4:25 PM

Friends !!

The festive season is upon us - and what a year it's been!

We have our organising hats on as we are preparing to send out rewards right after Christmas - so if you are waiting on one of our fabulous gifts the wait is almost over! Thank you for your patience and goodwill. You will be receiving an email regarding your reward very soon.

It promises to be an exciting 2016 for BEAUTIFUL DEMOCRACY - we will keep you posted along the way!  Most recently the team were in Wellington experiencing the moment that Real Choice brought the TPPA Citizens Referendum into Parliament by 'making it rain' with votes.

"BREAKING: Today on the last sitting day of Parliament for 2015, Real Choice took the voices of those who voted in the referendum directly to the government.

Of the 12,000 people who participated in the referendum 97% said NO to the TPPA. This issue has not and will not be debated in Parliament so we took pieces of red paper representing the 12,000 voices with us to Parliament today."

https://www.facebook.com/1628388307418789/videos/1670299793227640/

We will continue to capture the moments that tell the stories of those fighting for democracy in Aotearoa New Zealand.

The BEAUTIFUL DEMOCRACY team would like to wish each and every one of you a VERY MERRY CHRISTMAS and a happy and fulfilling new year.

Love,

BEAUTIFUL DEMOCRACY x

We received an immense and overwhelming amount of support for Beautiful Democracy and we cannot thank you enough for your generosity. Now, it is vital that we keep the momentum going but we cannot do it alone.

There are a number of costs involved in making this animation, including specialist camera and visual storytelling equipment to make the characters come alive within a hired studio space. We would welcome any contribution you’d like to make to our cause, and we promise to keep you updated!

Please share our links within your networks. It will only take a second but will make a world of difference!

It is important to remember that the fight is very much alive and that education is key.

Please help us to make WATER FOR GOLD.

Thank you so much for your support!

The BEAUTIFUL DEMOCRACY team would like to wish each and every one of you a VERY MERRY CHRISTMAS and a happy and fulfilling new year.

    Love,

    Director's message, BEAUTIFUL DEMOCRACY x

    26/11/2015 at 4:55 PM

"Thank you so much to everyone who pledged and helped get us over the line. We have been completely overwhelmed and inspired through the many people wanting to help us make Beautiful Democracy. I speak for my entire team when I say that having this kind of support at this early stage of our careers is both encouraging and validating.

I consider myself fortunate beyond words to be able to make this project. Through our production thus far we have met so many truly wonderful people, and I am excited to take their passionate defence of New Zealand democracy out into the world. The help that you have given us will make all the difference in our ability to do this. We will be able to honour their stories by expressing them with beautiful images and clear, thoughtful sound.

A thousand thanks for helping us create BEAUTIFUL DEMOCRACY.

    Love, Rose Archer x
