Somewhere Inbetween - Feature Documentary

Project 2015-10-06 23:36:26 +1300

Somewhere Inbetween is a feature length documentary following the journey of four friends as we walk the length of New Zealand from Cape Reinga to Bluff for 5 months, covering 3,000 kilometres.

Wh
y? Adventure. Discovery. Exploration. Celebration. Challenge.

Not one of us has done anything like this before; we don’t consider ourselves the ‘outdoors’ types (well, except Anton –he’s actually quite outdoorsy- but the rest of us are city-folk through and through), and when we leave our comfortable lives behind for 5 months to live on the road, everything is going to change.

Who are we? Just four good friends: Marta, Arthur, Anton and Emma. Each one of us has our own ideas about what this walk might mean to us but there is no knowing what it will really bring. We will be forced to learn from many mistakes along the journey and overcome tough obstacles, but we are excited for the journey.

Somewhere Inbetween will reflect the personal nature of every location and situation we find ourselves in, capturing its mood and atmosphere. The struggle of living out of a bag in the middle of nowhere, the peaceful serenity of cannoning the Whanganui River, the melancholy of the early morning fog, sunrises, sunsets, each setting offering a unique perspective and feeling. Most importantly this documentary will attempt to investigate the human aspect of our journey; the changes that come about and hint at what the road truly means for each person.

We have already gathered support from some very generous sponsors. Outfitters New Zealand have sponsored us almost all of our hiking gear (which is worth a lot of money). They specialize in high end hiking equipment so having them on board is invaluable. Holiday Parks Association of New Zealand have offered us $2000 worth of accommodation at any of their many parks across New Zealand. And, Interislander and Wanganui River Canoes have offered their support too.

We estimate that with the generous support that we have on board already - we can hopefully survive on $4000 per person for our food, camp sites and other consumables. So we are all saving very hard at the moment. But we are going on this journey, no matter what, even if none of us know how to properly skin an eel to survive….

We are continuing to seek sponsorship support, and our next big ask is from you.

We need your help to get essential film gear. As we mentioned, generous sponsors have taken care of a large amount of our walk expenses, now we just need our gear, and good film stuff costs a lot. Luckily, due to the nature of this project we don’t need heaps of gear, but we do need a few essentials in order to capture the film in the best possible way.

In total all of our film equipment costs around $15,000 + GST. This may sound like a tremendous amount of money, because it is, but we really want to make an amazing film. Our gear list covers camera, lenses, sound equipment, external hard drives, and even a small portable solar panel to power our endeavour. Auckland Camera has promised to give us the best possible prices they can, which really helps us. We will be raising most of this money ourselves, but we need your help to the tune of $6,000.

Your support would be so amazingly appreciated. This film is really important to us and we want to create something powerful that we can ultimately enter into national and international film festivals. We’re just getting started, and it’s a long road ahead but we would love for you to be a part of our journey.

To make things even better, Marta is going to be blogging about the walk and her experiences. She will be updating it as much as possible, and you can keep up to date with her blog and more on our website.

Also check out our Facebook page and give it a like.

The Team going on the journey…..

Arthur Gay (also our Director and Cameraman)I started traveling at an early age, moving country numerous times before returning to New Zealand in 2001. After high school I spent a year traveling the world with a close friend. This not only solidified my affinity with travel but it was also where I met my partner, Marta.

I am a passionate young filmmaker with a goal to continuously push and develop my voice while striving to make the best film I can possibly make. Since graduating film school in 2012 I have directed numerous works including a few short films (one of which has recently been selected for Show Me Shorts Film Festival), installation works, promotional content, music videos, and a feature documentary that screened as part of Art Week Auckland, 2014. This film is my biggest undertaking to dat, but I have high hopes and aspirations. I know there is an audience out there for this film.

Marta NeimaneGrowing up on a small farm in Latvia I was accustomed to a simple life. I later moved to Norway where I took my schooling. After finishing high school, with little knowledge of what to do next, I started working in a kindergarten before meeting Arthur whilst he was visiting his family. After he finished his travels I moved to New Zealand with him where I have set up my life for the past six years now. I have been working as a barista in various cafes around Auckland. It is safe to say I still don't know what I want to do with myself but I do know that the busy city life I’m living right now isn't for me.

The idea of walking the length of a country and one so beautiful and incredibly diverse as New Zealand captured me. Being away from any distractions, having the time to breathe at my own pace and being completely immersed in nature might be just what I need. It’s a chance to really start and finish something, to push myself and feel the reward of accomplishment. For me, this is about finally completing something I started and hopefully giving me a greater perspective of where I am at in life.

I’m also planning to write a blog along the way, updating it online when we have internet access. Writing is something I have always wanted to do but after moving to New Zealand and adapting to the English language it was put on hold. This walk will give me the opportunity to start and finish a book about my experiences on this walk.

Emma WilliamsMy ideas about this walk have already undergone many changes. Initially the idea of the walk seemed so exhilarating but reality sort of kicked in, and the excitement subsided. For a while I felt I had to abandon the idea or maybe just do a small part of the walk. Slowly however, the idea really started to solidify within me, I was reminded of that initial excitement and I realised that this was something I really wanted to commit everything to. Starting it and not finishing it is something I would not feel proud of, it would be something like a 'holiday'. I'm not looking for a holiday, I'm looking for an adventure, a mountain or two (or fifty) to overcome. I want to do something that is truly challenging, something that will teach me things no formal education can give me.

I feel as though I have arrived at a place in my life where I am really torn. I grew up in the city, it is all I have ever known, my family is here and my life so far is here. But ever since meeting Anton and seeing his passion for growing food and his dream of living away from the bustle and setting up our own resources for living, I have really started to question my life in the city. On the walk we will shed most of our familiar patterns and routines, our life will be stripped back and putting one foot in front of the other will become our day’s goal. I want the walk to take away the distractions of my current life -internet, cell phone, fast food, work– and show me what is left so that I can find out what is most important to me.

I am both excited and terrified at the same time. No one, even myself, knows if I can do this, but I am going to give it my all and see where it takes me - hopefully all the way to Bluff.

Anton Skerlj-RoversMy earliest memories are of Japan, where I lived my first years as an infant and young boy. Later on returning to NZ much of my childhood was spent exploring the bush clad slopes and mangrove swamps of the coastal Waitakere environs.

Throughout my school years I applied myself to two things, writing and drawing, with the topics of history and geography also holding my attention. I was a shy student, with a proclivity to pessimism. Then and now I would consider myself an observer, an analyser, with an inclination to dwell in the margins, refraining from expressing myself openly. Practicing art gave me a space, a medium for me to engage with the world, tell stories and manifest my ideas.

After finishing my school education I spent a year travelling France and Italy, being hosted by local farmers in exchange for volunteered labour. Tertiary studies followed; three immersive years learning and refining skills and concepts around handcrafted small objects and jewelry.

Since my early teens I’ve been fortunate to have walked a handful of the better known trails of NZ, from these expeditions I know it can be an arduous venture, but through hardship there is also potential to experience moments with great vividness and intensity.

I aspire to a less complicated, more resilient manner of being, I don’t yet understand what this entails or how it might be achieved, but through a state of openness and searching I hope to gain insight on our journey to perhaps begin to grasp what the nature of a simple life could be.

I came from Germany to New Zealand in 2014 to work with Candlelit Pictures and have been working on several projects with them since then. Being part of this documentary is super special to me. I love personal challenges and think this is a great opportunity to show human struggle with life combined with the beautiful nature of New Zealand. I'm pretty sad I can't walk with them but will definitely join for a day and support them as much as I can from back home.

It has been a little while now since our PledgeMe finished and boy oh boy what a rollercoaster it has been but now with big grins on our faces we can finally say it’s over. Now all we have to do is walk the length of NZ and make a movie. Easy…

We can’t thank you enough for your generosity and time, seriously we are so overwhelmed by all the pledges and kind words.

We’ve got on week left before we go off to the wilderness and we couldn’t have done it without your help. Arthur has now been able to source all his much needed camera gear and we are as ready as we can be for our big adventure.

We are currently putting together your rewards so there will be some coming now, some as we go and some after the film is finished. Some of you will be getting an email shortly to confirm your address for any rewards that require postage.

Stay tuned and follow any updates and Marta’s blog on our website.
