Online Modules To Teach Life And Work Skills
Project 2015-09-23 16:51:31 +1200
It’s really hard for young people coming into the workplace - and we want to change this.
*
What we're doing about it:
We're developing online learning modules for two projects: SAVVY UP for young professionals, and their managers, and Upwards for high school students, to help learn the unspoken rules of being an adult in the workplace and at home.
Upwards is a new social enterprise that is dedicated to helping young people feel more comfortable about becoming adults - aka to ‘learn to adult’. Upwards aims to develop young people’s life skills and social skills, an area of learning often overlooked within the regular high school curriculum.
Upwards is collaborating with Savvy at Work, an organisation that helps young professionals transition from study to the workplace. Together we’re creating SAVVY UP. SAVVY UP is focused on teaching young professionals about workplace expectations and what they need to do to get ahead in the workplace. It’s an online-based learning course that helps young professionals, as well as helping their managers to better understand these employees and their needs. This creates a more productive work environment for everyone.
The skills learnt via Upwards will benefit young people from every background, especially those in poverty, bridging the gap between the advantaged and the disadvantaged. These skills include: communicating at a business level, preparing for renting and living with flatmates, and knowing what to do after high school. Upwards wants to teach these students “how to adult” - with the benefit of Christina's online education/web expertise. |
There are many unspoken rules within the workplace and SAVVY UP is designed to teach graduates these rules, speed their integration into the work environment and overcome their fears. SAVVY UP will help young professionals with decision-making, knowing the right course of action in specific situations, and better teamwork - with the benefit of Tania's 10+ years' experience running graduate programmes in NZ. |
How the two curriculumns will work together:
Want to get your hands on these? You can (soon-ish) - but we need your help!
We've got almost all the skills we need (with help from our friends - thank you!), and the courses are being developed now (anticipated to be ready in Feb next year).
To develop the full SAVVY UP course, we need your help to get there. We’re aiming to raise $10,000 towards creating videos, resources and web hosting services for our first online module for SAVVY UP. (Our larger target is $20,000 - if we reach this, it will allow us to do the same for Upwards much faster.) Proceeds from this initial SAVVY UP module will then go towards developing online modules for Upwards – by helping new professionals succeed in the workplace with SAVVY UP, you’ll also be helping the next generation of young people succeed in school with Upwards.

Hi everyone, even though we didn't make our funding amount we're still really pleased and excited by the response we've had from so many people, and to us, this project has been a success. We've made huge strides forward in so many areas as a result.
To all our pledgers and supporters - thank you! We're incredibly grateful for your vote of confidence in us and our vision, and we're going forward in the next few months with as many of the next steps as we can. So watch this space!
And a huge vote of thanks to the PledgeMe team as well for being generally awesome and supportive - you're great!
And in the meantime, you can follow us on Facebook.
Christina, Tania and team :)
