Round The World Voyage Supporting Remote Island Communities

Project 2015-09-08 13:15:12 +1200

Ohana is a modern, seaworthy and well-equipped sailing catamaran. For the last few years she has operated as a passenger charter vessel in the summer, taking thousands of people to experience the beautiful islands of the Hauraki Gulf. In the winters we have spent several months a year in Fiji, Vanuatu and Tonga. While there we have visited remote communities who have no doctors, no optician, no electrician and have seen their needs. In 2016 we will commence a world voyage during which we will visit a large number of remote communities and help them to help themselves.

We are not asking for free money to fund our voyage! If you book a yacht charter or sailing tuition with us at the normal price over the summer here in Auckland then you'll have the most wonderful sailing experience here in Auckland AND you'll be helping fund our world voyage at the same time.

We can offer a whole range of sailing experiences here in Auckland for up to 24 people on a day sail or 8 people overnight including:

Office / corporate christmas parties

Family day out to the islands

Birthday parties, Hen & stag parties

Sail to Waiheke and visit a winery

Visit the island nature reserve on Tiri Tiri Matangi island (go at night to see the kiwis!)

Multi-day or multi-week holidays with cruising grounds ranging from the Bay of islands to the Hauraki Gulf and Bay of Plenty.

The world voyage project:

Many of the most remote communities only have contact with the outside world (a visit from a yacht) once every few years! Such a visit is an amazing opportunity to bring them desperately needed supplies. One of our first stops will be Vanuatu which is still recovering from last year's tropical cyclone.

We strongly believe that we should avoid remote communities becoming dependent on aid so we have to be careful what we bring. Often, well-meaning gifts such as solar panels end up disused very quickly because islanders don't have the expertise, tools or materials to maintain them. We shouldn't put them in the position of needing to find money to maintain such items. We will help to repair any broken equipment the islanders already have but we will avoid bringing any new high-tech or high-maintenance items.

Things we will take:

*There are no opticians in the islands so second-hand reading glasses are in short supply - whatever the prescription someone in the islands will want them.

*Books and stationery for schools are valuable.

*Basic medical supplies are great.

*Water sanitation equipment

If you make a donation other than booking an experience on Ohana then we'll spend the money directly on these things and similar supplies for the islands.

If you're interested in crewing on Ohana for part of our world voyage then do get in touch. For obvious reasons we'd be especially keen to have anyone with medical expertise on board. A doctor with offshore sailing experience would be our ideal crew!

Before commencing the world voyage Ohana needs expensive work on one of the engines (estimated at $13,000) and some structural reinforcement at unknown cost. This project will help to fund that work. Every little helps so we have set the target low. Please don't stop just because the target is met!
