Collab Project with The Ākina Foundation

The Ākina Foundation supports social entrepreneurs and ambitious communities to deliver game changing work in the areas of energy, housing, transport, land-use, and consumption and waste.

Hello everyone.  Thank you for taking the time to learn about our Project.

We are a team of two setting up an urban farm at a low decile school in Lower hutt. Our aim is, through connecting with our local families and wider community, to grow enough food on an acre of land at the school, to feed the entire school population. Alongside our food production, we are teaching cooking, self sufficiency, art projects, as well as a huge focus of connecting our families into up- skilling and work experience opportunity in the wider community. We have been up and running since July this year, and the initial fund raising we did is fast running out. We recieve no funding whatsoever from the school and a very limited amount through the local Council.

This is a pilot scheme to prove that this level of assistance in a grass roots way, is the most effective way of reaching families and creating change in our communities. We hope to roll out other Common Unity Projects in 12 months time. We have sourced much of our resources from within the local community, with a strong emphasis on recycled materials and local support.  One of our guiding principles is using what we have already got.  And what we have, in our community here in Epuni, Lower Hutt, is the willingness to consider new ways of meeting our needs as a community, as well as a strong understanding of the cooperation it takes to make such an ambitious project happen!

We are needing finance for the materials we cannot find, or have donated. The amount of hours being given to make this project happen means it cannot be a voluntary role. So we are also needing to pay the coordinator and one part time assistant - we both have families to feed too!  Epuni School will also be hosting the Project Sunshine initiative for the next 12 months, which is needing a small amount of funding to provide the info and seed packs promoting awareness of the plight of bee populations.  Please have a look at the link below for more details of this or find us on our Facebook page - Project Sunshine Aotearoa.

Please see our facebook page for what we are doing, how things are coming along and further details of how you might like to get involved if you are local to us.
