Keep Auckland Content Strategy Meetups Free To Attend

Project 2015-08-03 23:26:05 +1200

The Auckland Content Strategy Meetup is a monthly get-together of people who work on, or with, or who just love, web content. We're a mix of writers, publishers, marketers, designers, developers, UXers, managers, analysts, information architects, students, and all sorts of other things. We're building a community around web content, improving the profession, and making connections that help us make the internet a better place.

At meetups we hear from speakers (on topics like story-telling, machine learning, user experience, search engines, and social media), discuss books, share work stories and war stories, or sometimes just go to the pub.

This thing is growing. After about 20 months our full membership is over 350, and in a couple of days we’re on track to smash our record for attendance on a single night (currently it’s 50, but nearly 80 have RSVPed this time around).

There are three volunteer organisers behind this Meetup. Until now we’ve tapped our gracious employers for space to gather and a few dollars to spend on snacks & drinks, and paid for a few other things ourselves. But that was much more viable back when 20 was a big crowd. So here we are, asking for money. We're looking for official sponsors, and also offering goodies for individual pledgers.

The money will go towards things like:

  • snacks and drinks for everyone

  • gifts for speakers and presenters

  • venue hire, if/when we outgrow what we can book without paying

  • incidentals like our meetup.com subscription.

The group is free to join and Meetups have always been free to attend. We really, really want to keep them that way. With enough pledges, we won’t have to consider collecting cash at the door, which would be a surefire way to put people off.

We reckon it’ll only take about $200 a month to keep this show on the road. Our goal is a year's worth of funding. We’ve limited rewards so we’re not promising sponsorship of any meetups further than 12 months out. Anything we don’t spend will stay in the pot for later (meaning that we won’t have to come back to PledgeMe for a little while yet).

Told you we're growing fast: 400!

01/09/2015 at 12:08 PM

Since we launched this campaign, we've passed 350 members and now 400!

402 members

This growth is why we need to get money behind us - free meeting rooms and a couple of bottles of wine on someone's corporate card just can't cut it anymore.

It's so great seeing our membership trending like this. Sadly it also means that we've had to cap attendance at tomorrow's meetup (80 people are lined up to attend, with another 10 waitlisted). We don't like turning people away.

We said we were growing fast! 370

10/08/2015 at 3:48 PM

When I drafted this campaign's description, our group was about 320 people strong. Just before we published it, I chekced again and saw it was 350. Now, 5 days in, we're up to 370 members! This growth is so awesome, but to put on events that fit we need more a bit of a budget...

This campaign is now officially launched!

And this update is the update you post to get rid of the "no updates" yet message.

But yes, tonight, in front of a pretty damn healthy meetup turnout, we announced this little campaign of ours. Huge thanks to Content Insight and Brightpod for the rewards!
