We are Nana's Nails, a team of 5 BDes (hons) design students from the College of Creative Arts at Massey University.  

Recently one of our team member's grandmother lost her husband of 60 years. As you can imagine this left her feeling lonely and lost. After a rough week she went to get her hair done at the salon in her retirement village. Through the simple experience of being able to talk to someone while enjoying her beauty treatment, she began to feel like herself again, giving her respite from her grief. 

This is a problem shared by many senior citizens. Their family are often unable to visit or don’t, or they have a lack of hobbies or events available to them. This led us to consider social isolation in the retired community, as well as how beauty therapy, specifically hand massages, nail care and nail painting, can be a powerful tool to encourage socialisation. Elderly are an important and growing population in New Zealand and we feel they deserve
a little more company. 

We intend to host a series of events that will create an environment where older women at rest homes and retirement villages can feel comfortable and confident in a social setting. Each event will combine beauty therapy, hearty conversation and high tea catering. Our goal is to give older women in our local community the opportunity to socialise with people in similar circumstance while being pampered in a friendly environment. Essentially we want to engage them in an experience that we hope will brighten their week and help them to interact with their community. 

What your sponsorship money is for:

• Equipment - Nail station tables, tea sets, nail tools.
• Nail polish and other beauty therapy products.
• Team uniforms.
• Ingredients - To bake our own delicious treats for the ladies.
