Lindah Lepou / Equinox Apparel

Peni (Ben) has been an intern for Lindah Lepou learning a lineage approach to fashion and Equinox Apparel for almost 12 months now, focusing on building his confidence in real-world CMT (Cut, Make & Trim) i.e. sewing ‘production’ skills that will not only complement his three year fashion degree at Southern Institute of Technology, but enhance his life.

With us, Peni experiences first hand, our day-to-day pressures and the speed required in a real clothing manufacturing business dealing with real money gains and losses, from design, costings, cutting, sampling and garment construction that gives him invaluable insights he will continue to draw from over his career in years to come.

Being ‘independent’, building ones own ‘foundation’ using ones own lineage and unique gifts to live a fulfilled life experience is my expectation and utmost excitement for him.

This trip is an opportunity for Peni to travel abroad, research and develop NEW ideas, meet likeminded people and experience diverse cultures, visit historical places, utilise all the inspiration and start documenting his journey towards a stable and exciting foundation to call his own.

From Peni:

My name is Peni Moala, Tongan ascendance and raised in Auckland city New Zealand. I am currently living and studying Invercargill at Southern Institute of Technology in my 3rd final year of Fashion Design Degree.

This internship means to me that I’m gaining real world experience to help build my foundation. This teaches me independency, self-control, security, confident and trust not only in building my foundation but also in myself.

Why New York? This will be my first experience traveling to the capital of fashion and I want experience the art side of fashion in this city by visiting the MET Museum. Exploring this Museum will help broaden my mind and will help inspired and enhance me to create. Fashion to me means art, where I believe there is a story behind every garment.

My purpose is to love doing what I do. Taking everything that I have learned and use it to create something that will impact others.

The 5000 dollars will cover the cost of my flight and accommodation only
