Saving the world through video games

William Trubridge, the current freediving World Champion and double world record holder, dives so deep that he has rewritten the books on human physiology.

Trubridge is on a quest to raise awareness for New Zealand’s near extinct, Maui’s dolphin, a subspecies of the endangered Hector's Dolphin. Maui’s dolphins are on the brink of extinction with only 55 remaining in the world. We all need to take action.

In 2010, Trubridge set the world record, freediving 101m, unassisted by fins or flippers, on a single breath for Project Hector, bringing the plight of the Hector’s and Maui’s dolphin to the attention of the world.

Our goal with this PledgeMe campaign is to raise $10,000 to fund the development of William Trubridge's free-diving game, Plunge Free Dive. A game which showcases Trubridge’s awesome achievements in freediving while continuing to raise awareness for New Zealand’s endangered native dolphins so that together we can protect them.

Introducing Plunge Freedive

Play as William Trubridge in the time leading up to his world record breaking event, and train to become the world freediving champion.

Gameplay is inspired by real exercises and bodily considerations that William Trubridge undergoes while free-diving. Monitor heart-rate control, undertake breathing exercises, and from time to time, you too can save the day by rescuing Hector’s and Maui’s dolphins from gillnets.

We want the player to experience Trubridge’s love for the water and its creatures, helping to raise awareness for an important issue while they do so. More people play and pay for games than any other form of entertainment, which makes them an ideal platform for pushing real world experiences and causes. Every play session will contribute to helping to protect the New Zealand’s Hector’s and Maui’s dolphin population, raising awareness around their plight in an interactive way.

William Trubridge -  a true kiwi hero

William Trubridge is the best freediver in the world, with a double world record in two freediving disciplines. Aside, he teaches at his own freediving school and runs an annual competition to help others push their limits.

As this PledgeMe Campaign goes live, he is doing unbelievable dives during Vertical Blue 2015. You can stay up to date on Vertical Blue Facebook page and see the results here.

When he’s not 100m or more underwater William is out there making a difference. His non- profit organisation fights to protect New Zealand’s waters and its creatures. The main goals of the organisation are to help to clear the oceans of plastic waste and to help to prevent the extinction of the Hector’s and Maui’s dolphin.

Protect New Zealand’s little, native Dolphin

There are less than 7,000 Hector's Dolphins remaining. Only 55 remaining Maui's Dolphins, teetering on the brink of extinction. Irresponsible fishing methods have bought their populations to these levels, since dolphins are easily entangled in gillnets, invisible to the sonar they use for echolocation.

Their only salvation lies in the reform of fishing legislation to ban set net and trawl fishing wherever dolphins are found in New Zealand coastal waters up to 100m deep. Hector’s and Maui’s dolphins are the smallest, cutest dolphin in the world, and need our protection from the New Zealand fishing companies who have no regard for their lives.

Maui’s dolphins are currently the closest species to extinction in New Zealand. If we fail to protect them, they will be only the second dolphin species in the world to go extinct since the Yangtze River dolphin in China.

Even as a country which promotes its connection to nature, we still haven’t been able to make a difference to prevent the extinction of our own dolphins. This needs to change, now.
