About

The Crowd: PledgeMe Makes A Mag

Project 2015-04-22 14:26:05 +1200

For too long PledgeMe has resided inside your computer. And while some of the projects funded through this site have graced bookshelves and mantelpieces the world over, we — Team PledgeMe — have yet to create something tangible. Something you can hold in your hands. Something you can flip through while you’re on the loo.

Stuck in the computer

Which is why we’re making a mother flippin’ magazine.

The Crowd, as we have titled our tome, is our way of wrapping up three and a third years* of learning and toil into a handy dandy offline format. We love the feel of stock between our fingers, the gentle flip as pages turn, and the comfort of having a physical magazine to read instead of ephemeral electronic endlessness.

And what better way for a crowdfunding platform to do anything than crowdfund it. So we’re leaving it up to you, our crowd, to see if she should unleash this puppy onto the world in printed form.

We’ve got everything ready: words (in the right order), pictures (really good ones), and even some fantastic rewards for those of you who pledge. So get a’pledgin’!

TheCrowd

The team

A super-secret cell of magazine-makers had emerged inside Team PledgeMe. Rory and Jackson designed and edited Salient in 2009 and were chomping at the bit for a challenge. We threw in a wider team of writers and illustrators and all round ace people to fill up the pages.

Rory is PledgeMe’s Chief Awesomeiser. He makes things pretty using his supreme design skillz. Rory single-handedly took a random collection of word files and made them into this sexy design that you see before you.

Jackson is PledgeMe’s Chief Media Wrangler. He takes words and puts them into order so people can understand them. He also helps promote campaigns. Jackson edited this magazine and put funny little notes throughout it [Ed’s note: I did not! — JJW].

Jem is an amazing illustrator. She has done quite a few of the illustrations in this mag. She’s also used PledgeMe to crowdfund her illustration! Check out the Toaster Bike for proof that she can draw anything.

Jessie is PledgeMe’s indefatigable intern. She took a whole bunch of ideas that whizzed out of Jackson and Anna’s heads and turned them into words. Good words. They are presented here in this magazine.

PledgeMe Team

The rest of the team — Anna, Jen, and Will and everyone else — pitched in too here and there writing snippets and providing snapshots of the wonderful world of crowdfunding.

A sneaky peaky

With your support we can turn these artist's impressions of The Crowd into something you can hold in your hot little hands.

*Did we mention we forgot to have a third birthday party? Well, we forgot. But that's okay, because we're going to have three Three and a Third Birthday Parties where we'll launch this magazine and celebrate 1200 odd days of PledgeMe awesomeness. Oh, and EVERYONE WHO PLEDGES IS INVITED! So get pledging and sharing this campaign. We'll announce details soon, but there will be parties in Auckland, Wellington, and Christchurch.

Ready to go to print

13/07/2015 at 3:45 PM

As I write this our design chap, Rory, is putting the finishing touches on the magazine.

Apologies for the delay in printing. You may have noticed we got a little bit busy over the past while

The timeline from here is:

  1. Tuesday: final subedit.
  2. Wednesday: Final PDF to the printers + make badges.
  3. 3–5 working days later we have the magazines back.
  4. Next week we start sending magazines + badges out and/or arranging time to pick up and coffee.

Thanks again for pledging on this campaign. We're really super stoked that our crowd takes such an active interest in us and supports the fun things we do.

Speaking of which, that thing we're busy with: we're doing a second round of equity crowdfunding. So if you wanted to cut off a little slice of the PledgeMe cake for yourself now is the time! Check out the campaign here

https://www.pledgeme.co.nz/investments/147-pledgeme-limited

I will be in touch in the next week to confirm addresses and such for delivery.

In the meantime: live long and prosper,

JACKSON

The Crowd: in production shortly

Hi Pledgers,

As I type this, the rest of the team are putting the finishing touches on the magazine. We're waiting on some extra special last minute content all the way from the UK.

Please make sure you check your email — some of your pledges need some attention before we can process them and that's holdin' things up too.

Our very tentitive timeline from here is to have the final print ready version of the magazine in the next two weeks, printed the week after and sent out to you the week after that.

Some other important points:

  • If you pledged for one of the rewards where you get to put an ad in the mag I'll be in touch seperately to get the content from you.
  • Please make sure your address details are up to date in the back-end of PledgeMe so badges/mags are sent to the correct place.
  • If you pledged for the 'Coffee and the Crowd' reward then I'll be in touch to arrange a time for a cuppa.

Thanks again for pledging and I'll be in touch soon!

JJW

PS this campaign pushed us over the 50,000 pledge mark!

Y'all are awesome!

28/05/2015 at 8:09 PM

Quick note to say thank you to everyone who has pledged because we just hit our goal!

THERE WILL BE MAGAZINES!

Still 20 more hours to go! More pledges = more magazines and more awesomeness.

So so close…

Hi Pledgers to the PledgeMe Makes a Mag campaign,

We're soooooooooooo close to hitting our goal.

At the time of this update, we're a mere $345 off our goal.

We would love it if you could please share the campaign with your crowds so we get that final boost we need to get over the line.

I'm so committed to getting this campaign over the line, I wrangled a random Panda (it may just be Anna wearing a Panda onesie) to stump for us. Watch the video and share that too.

Get tweeting, facebooking, and emailing!

Thanks again to pledging and we looking forward to sending your magazines out to y'all soon.

One week to go!

22/05/2015 at 4:20 PM

Howdy everyone who has pledged on PledgeMe's campaign to make a mag,

As I write this I am trembling with anticipation. One week to go and we're a mere $795 off our target!

It would be super spectacular if we could bump over the $3000 mark before deadline.

To do that I need you to do a few things:

  1. Share this campaign. Put it on Facebook. Plaster it on Twitter. Start a chain email forecasting a grim future for those who don't pledge. Get the link out there
  2. If you know someone who has used PledgeMe to fund their project, then ask them to chuck in a buck (or twenty). One of the reasons we put the mag together was to celebrate our crowd (that's you gals and guys!)
  3. Let me know why you pledged on this campaign so I can make some little social media images to share. Flick me an email.

We've also added another reward as a caffientated incentive to back our project. Mmmmm coffee.

With a crowd anything is possible! Let's get cracking.

JJW

PS Here's a bonus .gif of me (since we had one of Anna last update).

Wow, today has been AWESOME!

13/05/2015 at 6:07 PM

Thanks everyone that has come in and pledged today. We love our early adopters the most, and you are all part of that gang. We might even make you numbered badges so you know how you rank in your supporting love :)

But seriously, thank you thank you thank you. We do what we do because of our awesome crowd, and we're so thankful to have you supporting our dream of creating a more tangible product.

To celebrate, we may have bought some cheese today. Which Rory decided to turn into a gif:

xoxo
