Fightback Magazine - Voices From Women And Gender Minorities

Project 2015-04-21 16:33:43 +1200

Fightback is a socialist-feminist organisation which publishes a website and themed bi-monthly magazines.

We have noticed that, despite the centrality of women, girls and gender minorities to the social movements of today, they are still a smaller minority of writers in the socialist press. We acknowledge that there are many reasons for this, some of them including the fact that these groups are weighed down by more unpaid work, that their work may not be as valued and that there's a higher chance they will come up against barriers for their involvement in political spaces.

Therefore, we wish to make the August issue of our magazine entirely written and edited by women and gender minorities to provide a platform for voices that don’t often get heard. Moreover, in order to support this writing in a tangible way, all contributors to this issue will be paid at a rate of at least $NZ100 per page of content which could be an article (650 words per page), art work or the cover design. Contributing to socialism, activism or social change takes time and resources, and we hope that this payment will help encourage voices we don’t usually hear, and give back to those who already offer their time for little credit or financial return.

However, we cannot afford to do this by our own resources. While Fightback will cover the printing costs, we are asking for those who can spare some money, and are interested in seeing more women and gender minorities producing content around socialism, anti-capitalism and decolonisation, to donate to this issue.

We need $2600 to achieve the minimum necessary to pay all contributors. If this initiative sounds worth supporting to you, please donate!

Only 4 days to go!

17/06/2015 at 7:04 PM

Kia ora whānau,

At the time of writing, we have only $145 left to go to reach our target! We are so grateful for the huge support we have had for this project, and are excited about the awesome content that will feature in this issue.

Please donate if you are able to - even $10 can make a huge difference!

Some of the content you can expect to see in the upcoming zine includes articles/poems on: colonisation, rape culture, mental health, housing, transgender identities, Pasifika feminisms, white supremacy and organising by queer people of colour. We are excited that for some of these contributors, this will be the first time writing a piece for publishing.

Except for the small fee that Pledgeme charges, ALL proceeds will go directly to the women and gender minorities who have contributed. If we go over our funding target, every dollar will be split between these contributors, so the more we get, the more we can give.

Ngā mihi ki a koutou, and thanks so much for the support.

We received almost 30 pitches for this issue, in a short space of time. We have made our selections, and we look forward to supporting writers on producing some awesome content.

Please pass this link on to friends and family so we can reach our target and give back to all of our amazing contributors.

Info for Contributors!

12/05/2015 at 11:39 AM

- Anyone who is a woman and/or gender minority can write/create for this issue.
- Contributors do not have to write on 'women's issues' - it can be anything under the kaupapa of anti capitalism / decolonisation / socialism / anti-racism / feminism and is open to your interpretation.
- If you would like to contribute, submit us a pitch of your idea (1-2 sentences is fine) to [email protected] by May 20th.
- Our priority areas are perspectives from tangata whenua, Pasifika peoples, immigrants and gender diverse people. If your piece is relevant to these perspectives let us know.
- After May 20th, the co-editors will decide on what pieces will be included in the issue, based on the pitches. Contributors are still welcome to publish on our website regardless, however, this will not be a paid submission.
- Once contributions have been confirmed, the final submission deadline for the full piece will be June 20th.
- We are happy to support new writers/contributors - so if you would like some help in developing your ideas, let us know.

If you have any questions, please email us at [email protected]
