Mike Garner and Neil Billington in Japan – CD project

Mike Garner and Neil Billington are two of New Zealand’s prominent blues musicians. They return to Japan in June 2015 for their second tour of the country’s blues clubs, in four main cities and will work with some of Japan’s best musicians in support. They plan to record in Japan, over two days, getting enough tracks to produce a full CD on their return to New Zealand. The album will be mixed, mastered and published in NZ.

The costs of producing a professional quality CD are high and we seek your support to enable this to happen. The funds raised will be used for

  • Producer Fee

BIOs

Mike Garner is a leading New Zealand blues singer and songwriter with nearly 40 years’ experience. He has performed extensively in festivals in both Australia and in New Zealand as well as touring the UK, Europe, Nepal, Japan and the Pacific. Mike plays acoustic, electric and resonator guitars, harmonica and occasionally mandolin and other stringed instruments too!

"Part of the fun of going to New Zealand for me is getting to hear Mike Garner. He's one of my favorites." - Doug MacLeod

"Why A Woman Gets The Blues" shows that Mike Garner is a very talented musician. It is a collection of songs, all played with aplomb, regardless of whether delivered solo (guitar/harp) or with the band. The UK's loss has definitely been NZ's gain!" - Gordon Baxter, Blues in Britain, December 2011

"This is simply an excellent album. Besides a highly original cover of the Stones' world famous number "Honky Tonk Women" there are a variety of styles and songs to listen to, almost all equally fascinating. Another great cover is Howling Wolf's "You Gonna Wreck My Life" with Mike playing brilliantly on resonator guitar. This is an inviting album that will surely make you look forward to hearing more work by the man. Mike Garner is a fascinating artist that you absolutely must discover." - Rootstime - Belgium

Neil Billington has shown he is one of the leading exponents of the harmonica to come out of New Zealand, and combines a rare capacity for the traditional blues harmonica and the less typical chromatic harmonica. He is equally at home whether playing in the ‘Chicago-style’ of Little Walter, or the more sophisticated jazz sensibilities of the Belgian jazz great, Jean ‘Toots’ Thielemans.

Neil has appeared with everyone from NZ jazz maestro Rodger Fox's big band, through to jazz combos and electric blues bands, and folk and roots groups. Neil's own band, The Neil Billington Band, is a regular favourite in NZ's capital city, Wellington.

Billington covers a range of genres, from old-time pre-war blues, through all the great Chicago blues harp masters, to the ballads of the American song-book and the jazz standards of Charlie Parker and Miles Davis. His is a remarkable versatility on a demanding instrument, showing at times a formidable virtuosity with a deep soulfulness that comes from playing the music he loves. The most typical response he draws from fans at his performances is – “I didn’t know the harmonica could sound like that!”
