About

19th Century Guitar Music CD - Pre Order

Project 2015-03-09 19:36:30 +1300

Bruce Paine with his Louis Panormo guitar replicaAuckland guitarist Bruce Paine is following his passion for classical guitar and is making an exciting new CD of music played on copies of 19th century guitars.

Who is involved?

Bruce has taken on the entire project single handedly - the concept, performances, recordings and CD artwork.  The recordings have been made and now some help is needed to bring the project to completion.  With the necessary funding Bruce will be able to have the CD made professionally via the Stebbing Recording Centre.

Find out more about Bruce Paine via his web site.

What's needed?

$2800 is needed to cover the cost of:

  • CD mastering by Paul McGlashan of Classic Sound
  • CD manufacture via Stebbing Recording Centre (300 disks)
  • Artwork printing via Stebbing Recording Centre (300 copies)
  • Payment for the use of the recording venue
  • Pledgeme fee

What else has happened?

A selection of the recordings were featured on the following Radio New Zealand concert "Upbeat" contribution presented by Wellington based guitarist Gunter Herbig who spoke enthusiastically about this and other of Bruce Paine's projects.

What's special about the guitars?

Torres inspired guitar by Rod CapperBoth guitars are the work of Auckland guitar maker Rod Capper who makes outstanding instruments that are sought after in New Zealand and overseas.

The two guitars used in Bruce's recordings are unque.  They were both made in 2013 in the style of known 19th century instruments.

One is inspired by an 1833 guitar (see photo at top) by a London maker, Louis Panormo who remarkably spent his last few years living with his family near the Manukau Heads in Auckland.

The second guitar is based on an 1864 instrument (see picture at right) by Spanish maker Antonio Torres.  Most guitars today are descendants of the basic Torres design.  The Capper copy has been made with European spruce for the soundboard and macrocarpa (New Zealand cypress) for the back and sides.

It's nearly over!

Just one day now to go now before this CD fundraising project ends.  I would like to thank the few dedicated followers who have made pledges for CDs, downloads, etc and to let you know that the CD will still be produced regardless of the outcome of this Pledgeme page.  It looks unlikely to be funded in advance via pre-purchases unless there is a rush at the last minute!

This was an experiment to see how many would be willing to chip in and help take the risk away from the expensive process of making CDs.  This is something I do because I love the whole process of learning new repertoire, making recordings, designing artwork and seeing it all to completion.  This project was a little bit different and special too because of the unique guitars used in the project and the popular music that was recorded.

Only the Ed Sheerans of the world make their fortune from CDs and there is little or no money to be made from classical guitar CDs.  The most that can be expected, apart from the satisfaction of making something that people will enjoy, is to recover costs.  Anything above that is a hard earned and meagre bonus.

I've done my utmost to keep costs to a minimum while still creating a good quality product to sell.  I'm confident that such costs will be recovered in a reasonable time through sales.  CD's will be available at my future concerts and for purchase via my website.  There might also be one or two on offer as prizes on Radio New Zealand Concert in due course!

Sincerely,

Bruce Paine

The latest news about the 19th Century Guitar CD project is that Paul McGlashan of Classic Sound has agreed to assist with the CD mastering.  Paul has a vast amount of experience in sound recording with a wide range of classical musicians and as a trained organist and a member of the Viva Voce chamber choir brings a highly sensitive ear to the project.

My previous albums Lateral Lines and Guitar @ Museum were both recorded and mastered by Paul, and I am very happy to have his expert help with this latest project.

Another day, another project...

Sincere thanks to all who have made a pledge in support of this project.  There's a way to go before the target amount is reached and the planned CD can go ahead.  Hopefully others will also be inspired to help out and make it possible.  In the meantime I've been working on a separate recording project involving a set of five songs with guitar accompaniment that I have written as a contribution to the Gallipoli 100th commemorations.  Singer Imogen Abernethy is learning the songs in preparation for the recordings which will take place this month.  There is a good chance, if all goes to plan, that they will become part of a voice and guitar CD for possible future release and be considered for Radio New Zealand broadcast.  There will be further news regarding such projects as time permits.  Thanks again!
