Bevan Painting In Beijing! Artist Residency At Red Gate Gallery.
Project 2015-02-24 12:57:51 +1300
Hi, I’m Bevan Shaw, a visual artist working in painting and video based in Wellington. I have been selected for a residency at Red Gate Gallery in Beijing, China from March 1 – May 29, 2015 and will be living and working in one of the huge studio lofts there!
During this time, I will be making paintings and collecting material for a video work. In this previous video work you can see the layers and brushstrokes that build the paintings up to completion and reverse back down again. I hope to extend these ideas in Beijing by observing and painting the contrasting layers of ancient and modern architecture. I also plan to take classes in Traditional Chinese brush painting to learn new techniques and further explore how brushstrokes can disrupt and increase the awareness of time in a painting. The body of work I create during the residency will become part of an exhibition to be held in Wellington in October 2015.
Red Gate Gallery runs an amazing residency programme which allows international and Chinese artists the chance to live and work alongside each other. I will be able to exchange ideas with artists and art professionals from around the world, engage with new audiences and check out the vibrant contemporary art scene in Beijing.
I am seeking support to raise $2,500 from my Pledgeme campaign which will be used to cover the last month of my residency in Beijing. This month is vital because I will be able to meet with Chinese and visiting international curators and have the chance to show them my work during an open studio exhibition. I have already recieved some amazing and generous support from the Asia New Zealand Foundation which is helping to fund my first 2 months at Red Gate.
I have some great rewards to offer all those who donate money to this pledge me campaign. Also, if you see any available art work on my website or remember something you liked from an exhibition in the past, send me a message and I might be able to arrange something other than the rewards on the sidebar.
Thank you for your time and generous support. I am looking forward to keeping you up to date with my progress.
Bevan Shaw

Thank you so much everyone!! It is truly amazing and humbling to have such great support and I am making the most of this incredible opportunity you have made possible for me. The above image is from the Temple of Heaven and this kind of photo-bombing happens regularly. Below are a couple of my favourite shots. The first is one of the more spectacular wedding shoots taking place, (there were 7 others happening simultaneously)! The photographers assistants have just thrown the silk into the air to create the floating effect. Lastly, this exceptionally intense game of Chinese chess was going down to the wire near the Long Corridor in the Temple of Heaven grounds. I will be in touch and sending postcards soon. :-)

It has been wonderful working alongside and getting to know the fellow residents at Red Gate. From left to right are artists: Anne Hastie (Australia), Chan Wei (China), Alexa Wilson (New Zealand) and Emily Hanako Momohara (USA).
Spring is here, the blossoms are out and the paint is drying fast! I am working in the studio intensively now. Thank you so much to everyone for the amazing support and being on this journey with me.

Settling into the Red Gate studio # 6 at Fei Jia Cun (费家村) over the past week has been memorable. Highlights have included seeing some spectacular exhibitions at 798 with other resident artists, the fireworks marking the end of the Chinese New Year period, finding a shop that makes delicious dumplings for $3.50 NZD. Below is a shot from my favourite exhibition, Liu Wei: Colors at UCCA. Thank you to everyone for the support!
