2015 Paw-Traits Pet Photography Sessions
Project 2015-01-21 09:13:25 +1300
Our pets very very quickly wiggle their way into our homes, our lives and our hearts. They very quickly become members of our families - and they are even quicker to snap up our favourite spot on the couch!
Hi, I am Tara and I love spending time with animals but more than that, I love creating unique and vibrant photographs that show the love and fun we have with our pets.
A Pet Photography Session provides a lasting and unique memory of the love we share with those animals but I know, that for some, a Pet Photography Session is a luxury expense that is out of reach. I offer my services free of charge to Animal Rescue organisations and twice a year, I donate one or more pet photography sessions to a family who deserves, has earned or would benefit from a Pet Photography Session.
In 2014 I donated three sessions to families in Auckland, Hamilton and Wellington. A timely reminder of the importance of 'family' photographs came to me when the second of these three pets recently passed away.
In memory of Floyd and Maddy, the 2015 Paw-Traits project will donate another three Pet Photography Sessions to families with pets that may be older, they may be ill - or the family and their pet have just made a really big contribution to their community.
How I find the Families
I will be searching for nominations for the sessions until the end of April 2015 - and this is another way you can help. You can nominate anyone you like, including yourself, here: Paw-Traits Donated Pet Photography Sessions Nominations.
The choosing part is the hard part. Last year I sat on the couch and read through all the nominations with a box of tissues and a large glass of wine. I wanted to choose everyone - unfortunately (unless I raise a couple of thousand dollars) its just not possible
Session Time
I will travel anywhere in New Zealand and then spend between 2 and 6 hours with the family and their pet. I ask all sorts of questions about them and what they love to do and we craft a session, at their favourite location or their home, around the things that they enjoy the most. I'll provide the treats and the toys - they provide the giggles .. and probably a bit of slobber too.
Then the session photographs will be prepared for them to view in their own online gallery. I create low resolution photographs (with a wee watermark) for them to share as well as social media images. All of the digital copies are donated.
I will assist with printing if the families would like me to but they are under no obligation to spend any money with me.
This year I will also be donating a beautiful wrapped canvas to each of the families.
Whats in it for You?
This is a FEEL GOOD project - there isn't a product to be sold created at the end of it.
I want to keep this project really simple - the rewards are really basic (virtual high fives and lots of reasons to dance) as at the end of the day, this project is really about providing lasting memories to a family who could really benefit from them.
And what happens if I don't reach my PledgeMe goal?
Well, in all honesty, just like last year I will get there.
I am selling old photography equipment, stock photography and putting my own money in to this Project. Creating these memories is that important to me.
Thank you for taking a look through my Project, tara X

With just under 3 days to go, I'm making the call that the 2015 PawTraits project has to be done differently. Before I say anything else, I want to say thank you, thank you all.
The people that have pledged on this project, I think I know you all and you are always the ones that jump in on my plans and my projects and support the ideas that I have.
I don't want this project to 'fail'. I don't want it to be a project that didn't reach funding. I want it to be a project that realised one way wasn't working and so it changed tact.
In the next couple of days I will be releasing my new Giving Back programme. You guys can see a sneaky update here: http://tarasutherland.net/pet-photography-sessions/giving-back/
And you will notice that there is an approved Givealittle Cause: PawTraits
if you would consider moving your pledge over to that, I would (still) love you forever.
Thank you again for being so fricking wonderful! X
36 Nominations!
06/05/2015 at 3:56 PM
The nominations for the PawTraits project closed at the end of April - and I have just gotten up the courage to read some of them. You see, I'm a crier.
There are 36 in total! WOW!
With 10 days to go, I have to knuckle down and try and get this project over the line - its all or nothing team. Does anyone have any wonderful suggestions for me?
Love to you all X

After a couple of days, the nominations are up to 16 - and I think I will need an entire cask of wine and a pallet of tissues for the night that I have to sit down and read through them all. There are truly some wonderful and kind hearted people out there that notice the little things that others do.
Thank you for your support and donations so far - it means everything to me!
We are truly off and running!

Night one and the nominations are rolling in - and thanks to you, we have pledges too!!
I received this message tonight:
"I'm nominating my sister Rachael and her dog Halo - Halo has degenerative disc disease and we're never sure when she'll do herself the injury that will mean the crossing of the Rainbow Bridge. My sister is planning a return to university next year so photos aren't in her budget right now but I know she'd love them!"
Reading the wishes people make for others makes me smile so hard!
